1. Sept 7th - Back to School Vibe Abounds: Personal Confession - I loved going back to school! When Labor Day roles around, I find myself in total “Back to School” mode. I get new school supplies (going tonight to get a new notebook and some funky pens), buy a few books to read and even consider a new shirt or two. More importantly, my mind kicks into “Back to School” mode. My year seems to start in September. I bring a whole lot of new energy and plans to the table. So, this morning, I gathered The MASIE Center team in our studio and we had my annual Back to School meeting.
The emails and calls that have come in today tend to reflect that sentiment from the field. People are building their 2011 Learning Strategies, projecting the budget for next year and working with a sense of the beginning of new work “semester”. Anyone else have that sense? Send me an email to emasie@masie.com
2. Visit to GooglePlex Learnings: Last week, I had the honor of spending a day at GooglePlex with the engEdu team - folks working on learning and development for Engineers at Google. As always, it was exciting to see how Google is approaching learning - including their exploration of content in the cloud and the ability of anyone on the team being able to author courses or content bundles. We had a robust set of conversations about the evolving roles that video is playing in learning, germane to their ownership of YouTube, as well as the wide range of learning formats that learners want to use to gain knowledge. Google will be at Learning 2010 as participants and presenters, sharing some of their Open Source tools and approaches.
3. Tags for Learning: We are extending our experiments with the use of smartphone/cell phone cameras for acquiring content by deploying a wide set of “Tags” at Learning 2010. Using Microsoft Tag, our event will be peppered with colorful tags that can be read by any type of smartphone (iPhone, Droid, Blackberry). The tags will be displayed on screens and also key locations throughout the event. When you point your mobile camera at the tag, it automatically takes you to a URL, launches a video or captures a set of text. We will conduct an experiment with embedding tags throughout Learning 2010 for both discovery and even competitive knowledge finding at the event. Info on Microsoft Tag at: http://tag.microsoft.com
We now have over 1,065 participants registered for Learning 2010. Info and registration at http://www.learning2010.com
