Special Report: China AI and Learning Innovation - A Conversation

Hello from the airport on the trip to Shanghai after a few busy days in Tokyo.

We are about to embark on a conversation about AI, Machine Learning, VR and Automation - as they may impact Learning on all levels (from K-12 to Higher Ed to Corporate Skills Development).

I am honoured to keynote a meeting of almost 3,000 business and government leaders focusing on the future of Learning with the significant investment in AI that China is pursuing. (Note: “honoured” is spelled British Style, since my browser picked up the Queens English in Asia as the spell check format.)

We will be exploring how learning could, might, should or should not evolve as the predictive and enhancement features of AI, Machine Learning and Immersive Realities hit the workplace, along with rapidly deployed automation models.

Our Learning CONSORTIUM will be representing the US learning field in these conversations.

If you would like to engage and help shape a dialogue and mutual experimentation on these topics, please send me a note to emasie@masie.com

Describe your interests and we will tag back to you shortly.

Have a safe Memorial Day holiday to our US colleagues.

Yours in learning,

Elliott Masie

1. ATD & Asia Colleague Meetups!
2. Storytelling for Global Reach.
3. Innovation - Solve a Business Challenge.

1. ATD & Asia Colleague Meetups: I would love to connect with Learning Colleagues during my travels in the next three weeks:

* ATD Conference in Washington, DC (May 18 to 22):  I will be presenting a session on Monday afternoon:

Learning Changes: Trends, Challenges, and Hype (Mon, May 20 | 1:00 PM - 2:15 PM | Room: Ballroom A, Convention Center)

Change in learning is constant! Learners, technology, formats, business realities, and expectations are changing rapidly in 2019. In this session, you’ll explore the key innovations, opportunities, and overstatements for workplace learning in the months and years ahead. Learn what to watch for in automation, AI/machine learning, immersive/VR tech, chat bots, predictive assessment, gamification 2.0, voice-based coaching, and global learning.

And, I will be at the MASIE Booth in the ATD Expo - Booth #2546.  Come stop by and say hello.  Or, send a note to emasie@masie.com and we will try to connect during the event.  We are also doing a State of the Industry report for our Learning CONSORTIUM based on scans and conversations at ATD.

* Visit to Japan (May 24 to May 28):  I will be in Tokyo meeting with colleagues about Learning trends and also Broadway theater coming to Asia.
* Visit to China (May 28 to June 3rd):  I will be in Shanghai and in Suzhou for a national conference on Training, Learning and Internet of Things.

Please be in touch via email or wechat (etbroadway) if we could connect during the Asia Trip.

2. Storytelling for Global Reach: As you may know, we are focusing on Storytelling as a major and evolving skill and technique for learning and communication at the workplace.  I was deeply moved by a video that was done by Disney to look at how one of the stories in the Lion King was performed in dozens of languages and cultures around the world.  Look at this clip to see how stories can be global and local at the same time:

Circle of Life Around the World!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0jC27RaaxJ0

3. Innovation - Solve a Business Challenge: I am increasingly tired of folks talking about innovation in learning being focused on a new technology - from AI to AR to xAPI.

Yes, technologies may be part of the “solution”, but innovation must focus on the “business challenge”!

Innovate on how your organization and workforce will shift their approach to meet a business challenge, crisis, opportunity or change.  Innovate on how we can make a problem go away or rise up to meet an opportunity or threat to the business.

Our workers don’t want to hear about more online courses being made available.  They want to hear about pathways to sustained or continued employment and career growth.  Managers are not deeply interested in our LMS technology - but they are widely intrigued about changing the speed to readiness and the culture of talent retention.

Start the conversation about innovation by approaching business challenges - and you will get better attention, support, financing and authenticity.  Learning will follow the shifts in the changing world of the business and marketplace.

Elliott Masie

1. Teacher Appreciation Week!

3. Personal Curation?

1. Teacher Appreciation Week!  This is a week to reflect and appreciate the teachers that have made an impact on us during our lifetime.  Here are several of the teachers that I deeply appreciate for their skill, empathy, strength and divergence in teaching style:

- Mrs Davis (2nd Grade, PS 173) was able to accept my thinking style and voice disability.  She engaged me in complex projects and assisting other students with reading and math assignments.  When kids didn’t understand me she coached me to be patient and find a second way of saying a word or sentence, as my speech therapy worked.

- Mrs Laura (5th Grade, PS 106) connected me with science as an art form.  She pushed me to create Science Fair entries, including a prototype machine that graded tests with sensing springs. Mrs. Laura said “you have to fail when you do a science project to get to a success.”

- Mr. Sterling Jensen (English Stuyvesant HS) turned on my love of theater.  I didn’t have the acting muscle, so he steered me toward running the lights and logistics for the school play.  He was an early actor in Roundabout Company.

- Dr. Richard Rehberg (Statistics, Harpur College) failed me in statistics and then I took the same class again with him, discovering the power of data and analysis.  He was clear that a student with a C in statistics was a dangerous being.  I got an A when I retook the statistics class.

- Dr. Rod Napier (Sagamore Workshop Leader) disrupted my approach to facilitating a group by the active use of listening, observation and energy.  He gave deep and targeted feedback to me, challenging me to evolve how I was as a facilitator.

These are just a few of the amazing teachers that have impacted me over the decades.  As we evolve learning models, let us not forget, honor and develop great teachers.

2. Elliott Podcast from ISTE Online:  I was thrilled to do a podcast with ISTE:

* Masie Center CEO Elliott Masie shares insights on workplace and lifelong learning.
* Listen at: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/iste-2/ed-influencers

3. Personal Curation?  When you have a deep “Curiosity” or “Content AHA” moment, how do you personally curate it?  Do you make a note on your phone, write a few words on an index card, add a thought trigger to your brain?  What is your Personal Curation technique or technology?  Send me an email to emasie@masie.com

3. Curating the Curation LAB.

1. The PROM (Masie Productions): 7 TONY Nominations! Yesterday, The PROM, an amazing Broadway musical comedy, was nominated for 7 TONY Awards. Co-Produced by MASIE Productions, The PROM tells a “now” story in a fun and wonderful way. It is a deep honor to be nominated and our actors, company, producers and audiences have made The PROM “wow”. If you are heading to NYC, check it out at http://theprommusical.com

2. Announcing: Storytelling & Broadway - Leadership Experience. We are honored to announce a new program:

Storytelling & Broadway: Leadership Experience!

Led By: Telly Leung (Aladdin) and Elliott Masie.
Including: Performance of The PROM.
With: Actors, Writers, Stage Managers, Directors and Storytellers.
June 26, 2019 - in New York City
Details: http://www.masie.com

This is a unique and very different experience for staff, rising leaders and learning colleagues. Storytelling is a major part of our corporate competencies and Broadway professionals are great teaching resources!

3. Curating the Curation LAB: We have been adding “Curators” to our LABs in Saratoga Springs. During each LAB, we have two curators capturing and re-framing the content, context, conversations and community actions. One does a text and graphic capture and one does a complete video capture. These are shared in a confidential site for the LAB participants. It allows the learners to concentrate on the real-time experiences and know they have a fully curated capture to use after the event. Try it out!
