1. Learning Genius Bar for Learning Innovations!
2. Your Ideas, Experiences and Sessions, Please!
3. Reading Non Sequentially.

1. Learning Genius Bar for Learning Innovations!  We are very excited to add a “Learning Genius Bar” at Learning 2018 - harnessing the expertise, experience and collaboration of our 2,000 global learning participants.

Our “Genius” Volunteers will be organized by area of expertise (e.g. Design Models, xAPI, Mobile Tech, Assessment, Organizational Politics, Compliance, UserExperience, Facilitation, Leadership and more).   Learning 2018 Participants can reserve time at the Genius Bar as individuals or as a small group from a company with a common concern.

We hope that you, and your team, will join us at Learning 2018 and benefit from our Genius Bar!  Learning 2018 details and Early Registration Discounts at http://www.learning2018.com

2. Your Ideas, Experiences and Sessions, Please: Learning 2018 is Designed For and With YOU!  Be an active part of the design and activities at Learning 2018!  We already have over 70 sessions in development, but we want the input and thinking of our over 2,000 participants!

We would love YOUR help in the Design and Development of the Content, Conversations, Experiences and more at Learning 2018!   We are now deep into the DESIGN of Learning 2018 – Elliott Masie’s 28th Annual Learning Conference – and we want to open up the thought and creative process to our learning colleagues.

Please think about sessions, experiences, dialogues, labs, or learning activities that you want to LEAD or ATTEND at Learning 2018. And, this year we are adding a major addition – “Tech@Learning” – that will explore emerging technologies (from Chatbots to Smart Speakers to Immersive Realities). Please share your thoughts with us via a short form that will take less than 5 minutes to complete:

https://www.masie.com/learning2018ideas

Your ideas and input will help us shape the over 125 sessions, experiences, and activities at Learning 2018. After we receive your ideas, our Design Team will tag back to you in the coming weeks!

PLEASE NOTE: Our sessions will be led by colleagues who are already planning to attend the event and not selling or marketing learning services or products. (If you are a learning supplier and would like to lead a session, sponsorships are still available. Contact Steve Rosenblum for more information at steve@masie.com / 518-350-2224.)

3. Reading Non Sequentially: Well, it is time for me to admit one of my “learning quirks”.  I am NOT a sequential reader. There is probably a psychological term for it - but I just can’t follow the front to end flow of any book - even fiction.

Ever since I was a child, I always loved to “jump around” the table of contents.  I still will often read the last chapter in a mystery to determine if I want to go through the whole sequence.  Even though I write quite a few forwards to books, I wish the forward were in the middle.

So, I am always wanting to give my learners in a program the ability to re-sequence content or to shift the flow.  Anyone else have my “condition” :)  Send me a note to emasie@masie.com

1. K to 12 Education Can Teach Corporate Learning!
2. Learning 2018 Innovations Rolling Out!
3. Oculus Go - Mobile Immersive is Impressive.

1. K to 12 Education Can Teach Corporate Learning!  Hello from Chicago, where I was honored to speak at a leadership session of ISTE, a huge event that draws more than 20,000 educators from the K to 12 and University spaces.  For the last two days, I have been immersed and surrounded by learning technologies that are targeted at students in education settings - and I have been on a non-stop learning journey.  Here are some impressions and follow-ups:

* Learning at each level (K-12, Higher Education, Workplace, Health and Hobbies) is branded as totally different - yet the learning processes and even the learning tech cuts across those spaces.  We need to find better ways to collaborate and learn from each other’s worlds.

* Learning tech and methods from schools can provide great working models for learning innovation at the corporate workplace.  I have seen demonstrations of learner-centered methods and personalization that are immediately applicable to corporate learning.  Yet, we talk different “languages”.

* Educators must get more time in our work settings to understand how the world of work is changing.  It would be wonderful to have 1 month or summer-long immersive experiences for teachers and educators - to get a sense of the changing workplace and work cultures.

Richard Culatta, who is our Learning Innovation Fellow, is the CEO of ISTE and we are already working on ways to bridge corporate education and school level learning.  Stay tuned.  Info on this event is at https://conference.iste.org/2018/

2. Learning 2018 Innovations Rolling Out!  We are VERY excited about the innovations and experiences that we are adding to Learning 2018 - our 28th annual event to be held in Orlando from November 4th to 7th.  These include:

* UserExperience LAB
* ChatBot Development
* Senior Learning Leader Forum
* “Learn to Code” Experience
* Designing for Failure as a Step to Success
* Curation & Learning
* Assessment and Data Analytics Exploration
* Storytelling Narratives for Learning
* Global Learning Perspectives
* Machine Learning - Realities and Hype!
* Diversity and Inclusion Focus for Learning

* Learning Innovations Gallery
* And much more…

Check out the keynotes, content themes and experiences.  Take advantage of our Early Registration and Group Discounts at http://www.learning2018.com

3. Oculus Go - Mobile Immersive is Impressive:  This week we have been experimenting with the new Oculus Go, an immersive portable device.  Its price is much lower - $199 - and it does not require any other computer equipment.  The experiences are cool and it lays out a road to where we might start to see workplace learning content in this format.  Check it out at: https://www.oculus.com/go/

A Special Note to Learning TRENDS Colleagues and Readers:

Dear Friends,

First, I took the liberty of skipping a sequence number for Learning TRENDS to make this my 1,000th edition.

I started this newsletter/blog back in 1997 and over the years have been sharing professional, business and personal updates.  I have some very exciting news about the future of Learning 2018 (and beyond).

MASIE Productions, along with our Learning CONSORTIUM, has entered into a partnership with CloserStill Media to jointly produce, enhance and expand our annual Learning 2018 event (Nov 4 to 7, Orlando).

CloserStill runs the world’s leading workplace learning events, including Learning Technologies, with three market-leading annual events in Paris, Berlin (with Online Educa) and London, a global digital community, and the industry’s leading awards programme for corporate learning and development professionals.  The London event in February is Europe’s largest annual exhibition and conference for the workplace learning sector attracting more than 8,000 attendees and over 200 exhibitors.

Together, we will take Learning 2018 to its next stage of development and design.  A new focus on disruptive technologies will form part of Learning 2018, with the introduction of Tech@Learning – a multi-strand content program focusing on adaptive learning, artificial intelligence and machine learning, emerging assessment technologies, ChatBots, immersive realities, edTech and venture innovations.

We will add more working LABS, including UserExperience for Learning, Voice Assistants for Learning, Feedback and Benchmarking for Learning Innovations and more.  The participants for Learning 2018 will be involved in designing a brand new “ChatBot” to allow interactive queries and connections throughout the event.  A global dimension will be expanded, featuring learning leaders from Europe, Asia, Africa and South America.  And more…

I am thrilled to be part of this new partnership and will continue to be the Executive Producer of Learning 2018. Our MASIE team will be driving the content, curation and activities of this event.  Learning leaders from around the world who work with CloserStill will be featured, as well as over 100 learning experiences from our Learning CONSORTIUM and other corporations.

And, there will be exciting new models for learning suppliers, including EdTech venture startups at Learning 2018.

As you may know, this year we have Leslie Odom, Jr., star of “Hamilton” and author of “Failing Up” as our Featured Keynoter!  Dan Pink, Serene Wang, Rebecca Stromeyer, Nick van Dam and others will also be adding excitement and content as keynoters.

Here are quotes you will see in the press releases and stories about our new partnership:

Commenting on the joint venture with Masie, CloserStill’s Learning Group Director, Mark Penton, said: “We are thrilled and honoured to be working with Elliott and his team. Elliott is an innovator and a disruptor and we feel that our combined global experience in the learning world will make for a very exciting new era for the Learning Conference which we have long admired and respected.”

“It is an amazing time in the world of learning – as new technologies and approaches enable organizations and employees to learn anytime from anywhere.  I am thrilled to have our Learning Conference, with over 28 years of experience, become part of CloserStill’s international group of conferences and events.  Together we will link learning leaders in the UK, Germany, France, Singapore and beyond with the learning executives attending Learning 2018 in the US.  It will be an exciting time for me and our team,” said Elliott Masie.

We already have 516 colleagues registered for Learning 2018.  We invite you to join us as we take our event, in its 28th year, into the future of learning.

Please feel free to contact me at emasie@masie.com and we would love to have you join us in our new global learning outreach.

Yours in learning
