645 - Taking the Train to Learning; Just-in-Time Decisions

Learning TRENDS by Elliott Masie - Oct 19, 2010.

1. Taking the Train to Learning - Aboard the Silver Meteor.
2. Last Minute Registrations Coming In - Just in Time Lives.

1. Taking the Train to Learning - Aboard the Silver Meteor: I am about to board Amtrak’s Silver Meteor, taking the train from New York City to Orlando, Florida for Learning 2010. It has become a personal tradition to take the “train” to “learning.” For 22 hours, I get a chance to watch America’s landscape flow by the window of my cozy little bedroom, chat with diverse folks on the train and finalize my “Learning Changes and Challenges” keynote for Sunday night.

This year, I am loaded with connectivity and technology. My iPad has several movies stored and it help me track the tracks as I move southward. If you are along the route and would love to chat, send me your phone number to emasie@masie.com and I will try to call as I pass your region. See the route at http://goo.gl/qcuH

The speed of the train is also a metaphor for our need to play with speed and compression in our design of learning experiences. Many are getting shorter as we compress 3-day events into one-day seminars and “one-dayers” into 2-hour webinars. But, sometimes we may want to design in the opposite direction - taking more time or even stretched out time to immerse in a topic differently. I’d love to see a five or ten-year, slow and steady MBA or PhD program, allowing learners to take a continual slow drip approach. Or, apply that to a 1-year-long safety training program.

So, I’ll think of the thousands of Learning Trends readers along the train’s path in the next day. Send me a note if you have some thoughts about trains or would like to chat for a few minutes. (emasie@masie.com)

2. Last Minute Registrations Coming In - Just in Time Lives: We are all doing things at the last minute, and that includes signing up for events. It creates both opportunities and challenges. We have over 1,665 registrations and will get another 40 to 70 in the final few days before the start of Learning 2010 on Sunday. In fact, 3 came in as I am writing this note. Ordering food, program guides and sizing rooms has become an art - given that almost 40% of registrations happen in the last five weeks - and we are all focused on Sustainability (not wanting to waste paper, food or resources).

Yet, last minute registrations are a new fact of life. We have booked an extra room block and even added a “Last Minute” fee, discounted beyond the on-site registration cost to support organizations that have to wait until Thursday, Friday or even Saturday to approve someone’s attendance. If you are in that “Just in Time” place, don’t fret. We are ready for you. Go to http://www.learning2010.com

643 - Coming Attraction PodCasts and Supplier Perspectives

Host: Learning 2010 - Oct 24 to 27, Orlando, FL, USA.

1. 67 Learning Coming Attraction PodCasts:
2. 22 Learning Supplier Perspectives PodCasts.

1. 67 Learning Coming Attraction PodCasts: It is often difficult to select a class or session from a course catalogue. What about some “coming attraction” PodCasts? Each year, we invite the faculty of our Learning conference to do a simple, 5-minute PodCast, previewing their planned session - adding context, passion and perspectives. Our approach is to provide each faculty member with a telephone number that they call to record a short PodCast. We then download, trim and edit the content. Thousands of people listen to these PodCasts. Check them out at http://learningwiki.editme.com/L10-Podcasts

2. 22 Learning Supplier Perspective Podcasts: Speaking of PodCasts, I have been busy interviewing the CEOs and CLOs of major learning suppliers about their views of Learning Changes and Learning Challenges facing the field. Each of these free, 12-minute PodCasts can be found at http://www.learning2010.com/sponsors

Note: “Last Minute” Registration Rates available for Learning 2010 - starting in 2 weeks: http://www.learning2010.com

642 - Deloitte Builds New Learning Campus - Google Learning to the Cloud

1. Deloitte Building New Corporate University — Google Learning to the Cloud.
2. Panama Colleagues Wanted!

1. Deloitte Building New Corporate University — Google Learning to the Cloud: I love the diversity of Learning Strategies that are developing in our field. Two different (yet connected) approaches can be found in diverse sessions at Learning 2010:

“Deloitte University: Going Physical in a Virtual Age”
Led by Bill Pelster, Principal, National Director Talent Development for Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu

In October 2011, Deloitte will open a 750,000 square foot state-of-the-art learning facility in Westlake, TX. Deloitte University will be a central destination for delivering leading-edge leadership and professional development at critical moments in the careers of our professionals. Learn why we made this investment, our strategy for delivering in-person and virtual training, and the transformation process we underwent to align our learning strategy with our talent strategy and career development.

* The case for investing in a physical learning space.
* The value of face-to-face learning.
* Alignment of learning and talent strategies.

Bringing Cloud Learning to Your Organization: Google’s Approach Led By: Julie Clow - Organizational Development Manager, Google

The move to cloud-based technologies in the enterprise requires more than just adoption of new tools. It brings with it a shift in culture towards peer-to-peer interaction, which challenges the top-down hierarchical assumptions about how people should work. Cloud “Learning” will require the same shift towards open access to information and peers. Learn how Google is making the shift to Cloud learning through:

* Strategy: the role of peer-to-peer learning in the L&D community
* Culture: how Google’s culture enables broad organizational participation in continuous learning
* Tools: how Google is using CloudCourse for peer-to-peer learning

It will be fun to see how the Physical and Virtual worlds take unique roles in the Learning Strategy of these two companies - and how they translate into unique learning cultures. Join 1,700 learning colleagues at Learning 2010 on Oct 24 to 27 in Orlando. Advanced Registration Discounts: http://www.learning2010.com

2. Panama Colleagues Wanted: We will be traveling to Panama in Central America for a week at the end of October. I spent a lot of time in Panama - before the handover of the Canal to the Panama Government - working on training skills for the transition. It will be fun to return for a “learning vacation”. I would love to meet with any learning colleagues or TRENDS readers in Panama. Send me a note to emasie@msaie.com

641 - Memorable Teachers; White House Learning Partnerships; Leading by Listening

Learning TRENDS by Elliott Masie - Oct 4, 2010.
#641 - Updates on Learning, Business & Technology.
55,164 Readers - http://www.masie.com - The MASIE Center.
Host: Learning 2010 - Oct 24 to 27, Orlando, FL, USA.

1. White House Announcement on Learning Partnerships Today.
2. Memorable Teachers eBook - 5 Years Old and Still Moving.
3. Embedding an Orchestra in the Audience? - Music Paradigm!

1. White House Announcement on Learning Partnerships Today: Later today, President Obama and 5 Major Corporations (McDonalds, Accenture, Gap, P.G.& E. and United Technologies) will announce a new Public-Private Partnership to link corporate learning offerings to community colleges as part of a ReSkilling effort. The commitments from private partners are primarily in the form of providing guidance and scholarships to community colleges: not in donating funds directly to the new national program. P.G.& E., for example, says it plans to provide $1.5 million of in-kind support for each of the next three years to community colleges, including equipment donations and student field visits according to Tamar Sarkissian, a P.G.& E. spokeswoman.

Tomorrow, a White House Summit on Community Colleges hosted by Jill Biden, the Vice President’s wife, will focus on this program. I have invited Kathy Mannes, Director of the Center for Workforce & Economic Development at the American Association of Community Colleges, to come to Learning 2010 to discuss these efforts and how we can better link corporate learning and higher education for ReSkilling. We will publish the formal announcements about this program in the next 48 hours.

2. Memorable Teachers eBook - 5 Years Old and Still Moving: In 2005, we created an eBook called, My Most Memorable Teacher (or Trainer). I ran across it on my server this weekend and was moved by the hundreds of stories from around the world. Plus, I reread my own tribute to Mrs. Ham, my teacher from PS 173, when I was 7. Here is the link to this free ebook: http://www.masie.com/books/memorable_teacher_full.pdf

3. Embedding an Orchestra in the Audience? - Music Paradigm! As we plan the logistics for Learning 2010, one of the most interesting elements is the process of embedding over 50 members of an orchestra into our General Session with Roger Neirenberg, who presents a unique program called the Music Paradigm - teaching and experiencing the challenge of leading by listening. Creating close proximity between the orchestra members (and instruments) and each of our 1,700 participants is a fun planning process.
