Special Learning TRENDS From Tokyo Japan!

Note: I am in Tokyo for a one week immersion in Learning Simulation, VR, Global Learning and Theater.

1. Disaster Prevention Experience - Learning Parks in Tokyo.
2. Embrace Failure - Adding Rigor to eLearning.
3. Early Registration Discount until August 31st.

1. Disaster Prevention Experience - Learning Parks in Tokyo: WOW!  That is the best way to describe my day at one of Japan’s Disaster Prevention Simulation Centers.

I went to Tokyo’s Disaster Experience-Learning Facility and went through a multi-floor journey simulating the realities (physical, psychological and readiness) of living through an Earthquake, Hurricane or other major disaster.  Children and adults are given a tablet to react and learn how to cope with explosions, falling structures, medical emergencies and even the emotions of being separated from family members.

They combined rich experiential learning with physical simulations and even a jarring cartoon (Manga style) to take the participants through preparation for an emergency.

I will bring video and stories from these Disaster Prep centers to the main stage at Learning 2018.  We must learn from our global colleagues and emulate this level of readiness in countries throughout the world.  Here is an English copy of the program’s details: http://www.tokyorinkai-koen.jp/pdf/pamphlet_en_2.pdf

2. Embrace Failure - Adding Rigor to eLearning: We have to add Rigor and Failure to our eLearning programs.

I am often asked, as one of the people involved in the early days of eLearning, to comment on the state of development in 2018.

The largest issue we are confronting as a field of Learning Producers (beyond Instructional Design) is to more deeply embrace and deploy failure and rigor to our online learning resources.  In the age of quick compliance, many eLearning “courses” have lowered to have a 90% pass rate on the first go-around.  That meets the check the box requirement for compliance - but it lowers the learner’s engagement and often robs them of the ability to “Fail Forward” and experience the rigor of challenging content and experiences.

Let’s look at what would happen to the Video Game business if everyone got a gold ring on the first round.  People would ask for a refund.  We need to be true Learning Producers and shape digital learning to:

* Allow learners to safely “fail” as part of the pathway to success.
* Add adaptive and behavioral design - to increase the rigor to match the learner’s area of need.
* As Learning Producers, deploy UserExperience to push the envelop and still get high learner acceptance.

At Learning 2018, we are honored to have Leslie Odom, Jr., a star of Hamilton and the author of “Failing Up: How to Take Risks, Aim Higher, and Never Stop Learning”. We will explore how we embrace Failure as Learning Producers.  http://www.learning2018.com

3. Early Registration Discount until August 31st: You can take advantage of the Early Registration Rate Discount for Learning 2018 (Nov 4 to 7, Orlando), until August 31st.  And, next week, we will announce 2 more keynoters, including a Workforce Engagement strategy with over 65 million views.

Hour of Code for Learning Colleagues

TO: Learning Colleagues
FROM: Elliott Masie, Host & Curator
RE: Hour of Code for Learning Professionals at Learning 2018

It is time for Learning Professionals to take an “Hour of Code” and learn more about the changing world of technology and code.

Learning 2018 is working with Bloomberg to offer event participants an “Hour of Code”(tm) experience (https://hourofcode.com/us). Bloomberg is a global information and technology company focused on delivering data, news and analytics as well as building innovative products and solutions needed for the 21st century

Over the past couple of years, Bloomberg has launched initiatives to bring coding skills to traditionally non-coding areas of the business, specifically around the skills needed for advanced data analytics and data science. One of the opportunities Bloomberg has leveraged is the “Hour of Code”, which we will offer as an experience to Learning 2018 participants!

Originally developed for K-12 students around the world, “Hour of Code” is working to address the fact that fewer than half of all schools teach computer science. Girls and minorities are severely underrepresented in computer science classes, and in the tech industry. Hour of Code hopes to change this.

At Learning 2018, Bloomberg will facilitate several opportunities for participants to experience Hour of Code activities in which they can learn and practice a variety of coding languages, plus learn how to run “Hour of Code” experiences in their own organizations.  Details: Click Here.

Join us at Learning 2018, with keynotes including Former First Lady Laura Bush, Author Dan Pink, and Leslie Odom, Jr (Star of Hamilton) and over 140 sessions on Learning Changes.

1005 - Mad Scientist on Learning, Army Badges Dynamically Change, 100+ Learning Stories

1. Elliott Named “Mad Scientist”
2. Dynamically Changing Army Skill Badge?
3. 100+ Learning Stories & Case Studies from Learning Implementers!

I hope that everyone’s summer (if you are in that part of the world) is going well.  Here are a few Learning TRENDS notes:

1. Elliott Named “Mad Scientist”:  On Tuesday, I was honored to be named a “Mad Scientist” by the US Army’s Training and Doctrine Command!  We had an amazing gathering in Washington, DC looking at how the soldier in 2050 might learn.  My task was to frame up some of the vectors that could alter or influence how a person might learn decades from now.

Here is my “Mad Scientist” proclamation, which demands that I “always seek the future boldly, actively question conventional wisdom and assumptions, and passionately challenge the status quo”: https://tinyurl.com/madscientistmasie

2. Dynamically Changing Army Skill Badge? One challenge that I gave to the military leaders assembled for the “Mad Scientist” conversation about learning in 2050 is to shift how they think about a “skill badge or medal.”

Each was wearing several badges for skills or competencies, from tank driving to rifle shooting to navigation.  But, the badge indicated that they were “Ready” for that skill on a specific day - months or years ago.

Are they ready today?  If the person had not practiced the skill in a while, perhaps the badge (through LED technology) would blink yellow.  Or, if the person had a long party the day before, perhaps that badge might blink bright red.  Imagine if data about performance, activity and even bio sensing would alter that badge.  It would tell your colleagues a more immediate state of readiness.  And, it would be prompt you to do an immersion simulation or learning update - before using the skill.   Hmmmmm.

3. 100+ Learning Stories & Case Studies from Learning Implementers!  Wow!  We now have learning colleagues from major corporations and government agencies around the world leading Learning Stories and Case Studies at Learning 2018 (Nov 4 to 7 - Orlando).

These are high powered sessions and experiences, led by colleagues from companies that include: Amazon, Bloomberg, Google, Hilton, Marriott, Orlando Health, McKinsey & Company, Prudential, Visa and many more.  Here is a sample of the organizations represented: https://www.learning2018.com/index.php/stories-content-case-studies/menu-id-294

And, a quick reminder to Learning TRENDS readers to take advantage of the Early Registration Discount which runs until the end of August.  Go to http://www.learning2018.com for details and registration.
