Hello from Vietnam - Remote Keynote, Search Learning & University eLearning!

1. Hanoi to Las Vegas – Remote, Blended Keynote to Autodesk!
2. Search and Learning - Major Connections and Futures.
3. University and eLearning: Meetings and Roles.
4. Personal Notes.

1. Hanoi to Las Vegas – Remote, Blended Keynote to Autodesk! It is now 2:22 AM in Hanoi, Vietnam and I am about to deliver a blended, remote keynote all the way over to Las Vegas at the global Autodesk Conference.  Since I was traveling to Asia, the only way to keynote was to use a blended model. So, I made a 20 minute Learning Futures video tape before I left that is now being played in Las Vegas.  And, in about 15 minutes, we will shift to an interactive Q and A with hundreds of Autodesk colleagues.

Sure, we had to alert the front desk in Hanoi about the call and test the quality of the connection by phone.  And, it works. So, in a few minutes, I will pause the writing of this TRENDS and keynote over quite a distance.  Cool!

2. Search and Learning - Major Connections and Futures: I am more and more convinced that the learning field must do a deeper exploration of the role of search engines in learning design and delivery.  In each of the Asian countries that I am visiting, the role of mobile devices and search engines is dominating the conversation about the directions of learning.

In Beijing, I had dinner with a colleague who is a leader at Baidu, the primary search engine used in China.  They are on a parallel and even more innovative path than Google.  We talked about the building of active API (computer interfaces) between learning design and search engines.  After I return to the US in about 10 days, we will start an exploration of how corporations can better leverage Search into Learning Design!

3. University and eLearning - Meetings and Roles: Today and tomorrow, I will be meeting with Learning Leaders at Vietnam National University in both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh (formerly Saigon) to discuss the role of changes in eLearning in the higher education and workplace readiness arena. For the past 10 years, Vietnam’s universities have been advocates for increasing the role of online learning to connect learners with remote colleges and to provide blended options for expanding classroom offerings.  Stay tuned for updates.

4. Personal Notes: The trip to Vietnam is quite exciting, including a home dinner with the family of a learning colleague whose Dad was an Army veteran and had fought deep battles in 1972.  We had great conversations about war, foreign policy and societal changes.  And, yesterday I took a Cooking Class that included a trip to the market to buy and eat a “fried River Maggot omelet”, which was totally yummy.

And, the remote keynote with Autodesk went great.  It was wonderful to hear the questions and perspectives from educators at that conference and to weave my current Asian learning experiences into the dialogue.  One of the interesting questions was how to support teachers and educators as they make the shift to using technology more creatively. My answer is that they must experience it first as learners to understand how to then use it as teachers. We must be learners as learning professionals.

Xin chào (Goodbye). Mai mốt gặp lại (We’ll meet again soon).

Yours in learning,
