72 Hours Last Minute Design and Logistics!

Dear Learning TRENDS Reader,

I am now in Orlando, Florida at Walt Disney World and in just 72 hours, 1,630 colleagues from around the world will be arriving for Learning 2013.  So, what does the Design Team do in the last 72 hours?  Is it calm and orderly, like a Big Greek Wedding, or what?  Here is a sample of the final Design and Logistics that are underway:

* Building a 60 foot wide stage and screen - 20 techs have already arrived this morning to hang, construct and create a Broadway level stage and AV setup in Walt Disney’s Coronado Ballroom.
* Secret Service and Secretary Clinton’s Advance Team are on site working with me on the detailed and seamless process of hosting Secretary Hillary Clinton.  Having hosted President Clinton and other senior keynoters with governmental security, this is less disruptive for us.  It is all about creating a very specific plan and process.
* Trucks with “stuff” are arriving at the hotel as I type, delivering supplies, equipment, registration materials and bags with Program Guides for everyone.
* Final Food Counts: Today is when we have to make our best and most accurate “bet” on how many breakfasts and lunches we want to guarantee to Disney for our food minimum on Monday.
* Last Minute Shifts: With 170 sessions being led by almost 220 people, someone will call today to sadly say that they can’t come to Orlando on Sunday due to professional or personal crisis.  We are ready to adjust the online schedule when that call comes in.
* Welcoming Early Arrivals: Yes, some people are already here - with families - to take advantage of Orlando fun before the event begins on Sunday.
* Rewriting Wireless for 1,600 Connected People: We create an alternate, high speed wireless system throughout the Convention Center to give our participants better and more reliable throughput at the event.  But PLEASE don’t watch my good friend Uzo Aduba’s show Orange is the New Black during the General Sessions. No one has that amount of bandwidth :)
* Last Minute Registrations: This laptop has just indicated that two people have registered while I am typing TRENDS. Last minute registrations are welcome! Just go to http://www.learning2013.com
* Twitter in Place: If you can’t come to Learning 2013, we will share content and community with the wider world in two ways.  #learning2013 is our Twitter hash tag for the event and you can follow along from afar.  And, we will be posting a large number of content segments in the weeks after the event at http://www.learning2013.com

I am honored to be hosting Learning 2013 and want to thank our Learning TRENDS readers for your support and interest in our process.  Wish us well and, as I will say to our Broadway Stars that are performing here, tell me to “break a leg”!

Yours in learning,
