1. An App That Monitors How Your Data is Tracked! I rarely write about an App, but this one is both fascinating and game changing for personal “big” data transparency.  If you use Firefox, I would urge you to download a free add-on app called Lightbeam. Using real-time visualization, it will monitor how any sites that you visit are tracking your presence - with or without your permission/knowledge. The result is a set of Infographics that is a powerful and personal view of the degree of “Data Exhaust” that each of us is creating to be monitored.  As an active student and analyst of the ups and downs of Big Learning Data (see next item), I believe that we will have radically greater transparency of our own data sets, including what learning or knowledge data is being harvested about us.  Take a minute to download and explore Lightbeam: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/lightbeam/

2. Big Learning Data Book Released: ASTD is releasing our latest book Big Learning Data at Learning 2013.  It is a project by our Learning CONSORTIUM, with chapters on the benefits and challenges of Big Learning Data by a dozen learning leaders from organizations around the world. It is also the fastest book publishing process that I have ever experienced as we wanted to reduce the time from writing to release in this rapidly changing field. Most of the authors will be at Learning 2013 and it will be sold there by the ASTD Bookstore. Info on Big Learning Data and online ordering at: http://www.learning2013.com/blog/item/bigdata.html

3. Training My Way to Learning - Choo Choo! I am on the first leg of my annual Train Trip to Florida for Learning 2013.  For the past decade, I have taken the overnight from New York to Orlando, with a comfortable bedroom to view the backyards of America on the way to our annual event. This year, I will be taking the train from NY to Washington DC on Monday for a few presentations and meetings. And, on Tuesday night at 7:30 pm, I’ll be boarding Amtrak’s Silver Meteor for an overnight trek through DC, VA, NC, SC, GA, FL. http://tinyurl.com/ElliottTrip It is a perfect way to make the transition from my role in Saratoga Springs to the Host/Curator role at Learning 2013. There are interesting people and good food on board - and great views of America - with tunes from my iPhone playing along the way. If you live along the route, I’d love to call you (at a decent hour). Send me a note to emasie@masie.com  One of my fantasies is to someday put together a 2 week long Train for Learning Trip - with a hundred colleagues visiting each other’s corporate learning sites along the way.

Yours in learning,
