2. Google Glass in the Bathroom? - Oooops! Every new technology creates new realities and unexpected challenges. I am one of the Google Glass Explorers, and have been wearing my Glasses in a range of situations, from shopping to waiting rooms to meetings and even in airports. Well, the last one created an Ooops.
I was in a major city airport and was wearing my Google Glass as I navigated between flights. For those unfamiliar with Google Glass, it has an option of wireless access to the web, taking pictures or videos and a range of emerging apps that allow me to read, capture or communicate while looking through a translucent screen in the lens.
So, between flights, a trip to the men’s bathroom made sense. And, I was standing there, not recording, but with my Google Glasses on, when a stranger next to me got freaked. He worried that I was taking a picture of him in a private moment. Which I was NOT!!
But, the first edition of Google Glass does not display if your camera is on, so that is not a wild assumption. It took a few minutes of discussion and actually a demonstration of Google Glass to not just the man who reacted, but several others in the bathroom. All worked out just fine - but for a moment I wondered if I would end up on a Google Glass Predator List and be restricted from going to public bathrooms in the future.
Lesson learned? There are lessons to be learned in every new technology innovation. And, the cultural aspects or even threats are not known at the start. We will need to be more digitally overt about indicating when one is capturing or recording. Google should add something that indicates recording underway to protect the privacy of people on the outside of the lens and the reputation of the person wearing the lens.
3. Building a Learning Bistro: The Learning 2013 Design Team is very excited about creating our first Learning Bistro at the event on November 3rd. We are taking one of our big ballrooms and converting it into a varied and folksy environment that will include:
* Small tables to pre-arrange “Learning MeetUps” with 1 or 10 colleagues with the same issue or curiosity.
* Cafe furniture to sit and chat with new colleagues - or spend time processing some ideas from the sessions.
* Coaching areas - where colleagues can stop in for coaching with a resource - or reserve time with a 30 Under 30 colleague.
* Registration - we are moving our Registration area to the Learning Bistro at the start of the conference - to mix checking in and chatting and collaborating.
* Online Connections - adding power cords and extra wireless access to help folks keep in touch back “home”.
* Some Entertainment - we will add some times with Entertainment, Pecha Kucha and at night some surprises.
* Coffee Without Foam - sharing truth with TRENDS colleagues: would love to do foam drinks - but conference fees for 1,600 people drinking cappuccino would be more than we are paying for all of our speakers.
* Real-Time Activities - additional sessions and activities will be added to the Learning Bistro throughout the event.
If you are not signed up for Learning 2013, please take advantage of the Advanced Registration Discount and special rates at our Disney Hotel. Go to http://www.learning2013.com for details.
