Y2K? 20 Years Ago! And, 10,000 Gadgets for Learning?

TO: Learning TRENDS Colleagues
FROM: Elliott Masie, The MASIE Center
DATE: December 31, 2019.

RE: Y2K? Just 20 Years Ago!  What Did We Learn?

In a few hours it will be midnight on New Year’s Eve 2020! But, 20 years ago, what were you doing at midnight for Y2K?

Billions of dollars and millions of hours of prep went into a worldwide focus and anxiety about the dangers of “old” computer code failing when the year changed from 1999 to 2000!

I spent that evening at the MASIE Center LAB - monitoring reports from our Learning CONSORTIUM member companies around the world - hoping that elevators would still run, email would continue to work, and airplanes would not crash.

It is intriguing to remember the Y2K experiences we all had. Send me a note to emasie@masie.com with a few of your memories from the Y2K ramp up and relief when we were relieved after midnight.

I wonder if we will ever have that degree of world and corporate focus on an impending danger. Personally, I wonder if we will ever see a global focus on Y2CLIMATE?

Elliott Updates from CES Gadget and Consumer Electronics Show:

I will be heading to Las Vegas next week to cover the Consumer Electronics Show for Learning TRENDS and our CONSORTIUM. There are almost 10,000 new technologies announced and exhibited and over 175,000 attendees.

We will be exploring the increasing role that Consumer Electronics and Emerging Tech (AI, Machine Learning, Automation, and Sensing) will have on the learning field. I will report on announcements about 5G, Facial Recognition, Smart Tech, and More - all from the Learning perspective.

Every day we will send updates to the Learning TRENDS readers. I would love to hear about some of your big questions about changing technology. Just send me an email to emasie@masie.com

1032 - Hello from Korea & China; Consumer Electronics, 2020 Excitement

Elliott Masie’s Learning TRENDS - December 24, 2019
#1,032 Updates on Learning, Business & Technology Since 1997.
58,575 Readers - www.masie.com - The MASIE Center.
Host: Curation & Learning LAB: Feb 4 to 6, 2020 - Saratoga Springs, NY.

Hello from the Seoul, Korea Airport.

In a few minutes, I will be returning to the United States after an intense 10 days in China and Korea - exploring the future of technology, learning, data, automation, and teachers.

I will write an in-depth note in the days ahead, sharing perspectives and a project that the Elliott Masie Learning CONSORTIUM will be coordinating in Asia and the US, to experiment with models for connecting AI (and smarter tech) with workplace learning.

I would like to personally thank the tens of thousands of learning and business colleagues that are TRENDS readers for your connection and great ideas. I am quite blessed to have a global network of experienced, rising, and brand new colleagues exploring learning, technology, and changing business models.

In 2020, I will be focusing on the intersection of our changing tech with EveryDay Learning. How do we design and produce resources that leverage the scalability of our growing organizations with data to drive personalization and learning moments every day?

I wish each of you and your teams and family wonderful Hanukkah, Christmas, New Year and other holidays.

Here is a link to a song that always moves to me to smiles, written by my friend Peter Yarrow, of Peter Paul and Mary. “Light One Candle” is a message that we need to absorb and honor:

1031 - Curation: New Focus and Name Needed; ID Learning Folks in Business Units; AI/Learning in China Briefings

Elliott Masie’s Learning TRENDS - November 19, 2019
#1,031  Updates on Learning, Business & Technology Since 1997.
58,564 Readers - www.masie.com - The MASIE Center.
Host: Curation & Learning LAB: Dec 4 to 6 - Saratoga Springs, NY.

1. Curation: New Focus and New Name Needed
2. Identify and Connect with Learning Colleagues in the Business Units
3. AI in Learning: Visit and Briefings in China

1. Curation: New Focus and New Name Needed!

Our employees are often overwhelmed by the range, scope and diversity of content, context, collaboration and knowledge resources and experiences.  Curation is a term that the learning field is using to OPTIMIZE the search, storage, recommendation and leveraging of the right content at the right moment in the right format.

Curation includes the ability of your employees to create content that can be found, evaluated and used by other colleagues.  Curation could provide a learner with a range of options (from internal and external sources) that include recommendations, ratings and content.

Curation will involve new strategies, new tools, new tagging systems and new skills - for learning professionals, for content creators, for knowledge managers and even for our employees and learners.

And, we should take a close look at the word “curation”. While it is a term that describes the process - I do not sense that it has been well adopted by employees. Perhaps we need to seek a better and more upbeat term.

If you are intrigued by Curation and Learning - consider attending our upcoming LAB in Saratoga Springs on December 4 to 6th.  Details and registration at http://www.masie.com

2. Identify and Connect with Learning Colleagues in the Business Units: There are probably dozens or more learning colleagues that work for your organization who are outside of the L&D Department.

Increasingly, learning skills are needed in business units.  Often, they recruit learning professionals to join their group and add learning perspectives on a local basis.  Sometimes, the learning professional has a non-learning job title, such as Sales Manager, but in fact performs a learning and performance role.

It is time to locate the widest circle of Learning Colleagues and build a connected network of contacts and resources. Often, when I visit a company to give a speech on learning, several folks pop up who are unknown to the L&D director - but are functioning in the business units.

They are your advocates, your colleagues and perhaps your future managers. Connect!

3. AI in Learning: Visit and Briefings in China: On December 15th, I will be visiting Beijing, China for a series of meetings with Chinese companies, universities and learning organizations. My colleague, Serene Wang, and I will be drilling down on how AI will connect with Learning.

If you have any colleagues in China, we would love to connect. I would love to meet them in the Beijing area. Send me a note to emasie@masie.com

Elliott After Learning? Curation, Storytelling and Smarter Tech!

TO: Learning TRENDS Colleagues
FROM: Elliott Masie, The MASIE Center
RE: Elliott After Learning? Curation, Storytelling & Smarter Tech!

What does Elliott do after Learning? We had a wonderful week at Learning 2019 - where I could enjoy the new role of learner, rather than producer.

Above is the “illustrated graphic” from my Keynote Address - looking at the waves ahead for us in the Learning field: Curation, Storytelling, Smarter Tech (AI ++), Automation, Learning Data Analysis, EveryDay Learning and Changing Roles for Learning.

Elliott’s roles are also evolving! I am so excited to increase my focus on key issues and unknowns in our field - from the intersection of Learning & AI to Evolving Storytelling Skills and making sure that “All Learning Counts!”

The Elliott Masie Learning CONSORTIUM will focus on these topics as we benchmark and innovate in a vendor-neutral collaboration.

Two Upcoming MASIE Events: Join me in Saratoga Springs for our popular Curation & Learning LAB from December 4th to 6th. Curation means making the learning experiences we create more dynamically engaged with changing content and changing learners.  Info at http://www.masie.com

And, if you are in the New York City area, we have a few seats that we will provide at no cost to learning colleagues in this week’s Storytelling & Broadway Experience - including a matinee at my new show, SEARED. Details at http://www.masie.com/storytelling  If you would like a complimentary seat, please send a note ASAP to emasie@masie.com

Let us look toward 2020 as the start of a new year and a new decade for Learning in our companies and careers. I am so excited to learn and collaborate with you! Check out the resources and Podcasts at our site, www.masie.com

1030 - Cooking, Train Rides and Learning Experiences

Elliott Masie’s Learning TRENDS - October 22, 2019
#1,030  Updates on Learning, Business & Technology Since 1997
58,259 Readers - www.masie.com - The MASIE Center
Host: Curation & Learning LAB: Dec 4 to 6 - Saratoga Springs, NY

This note is all about Experiences! I want to share a Train Experience to Learning and a Cooking Experience about Storytelling.

1. Train Experience to Learning - Reflection for Design and Backyard of America!
2. Cooking & Chef Experience for Storytelling!

1. Train Experience to Learning - Reflection for Design and Backyard of America! As many TRENDS readers know, I have a tradition of taking an overnight train ride to Florida each year before the Learning conference.

This Thursday morning, I board Amtrak’s Silver Star train #91 headed to Orlando, Florida. As it travels towards Florida, I will be relaxing, reflecting and doing my final design.  This year, as I am in a new role as a keynoter and Learning CONSORTIUM leader, I have more time at Learning 2019 to engage with colleagues and be a learner.

The reflection aspect of design is a key element. You build your model of content, activities, graphics and engagement.  But, then you reflect and consider and re-design some elements. The train goes along the backyard of America and you see the country and neighborhoods with a fresh eye.

If you are living along the way of the train, I would enjoy chatting with you for a few minutes as we pass by.  My mobile phone will work and let me know if you would like to chat about learning, life or our changing focuses. Send me your email to emasie@masie.com and a good time to catch you.

Traveling in an Amtrak overnight train is an EXPERIENCE. I will have a small bedroom and I’ll bring along some fun food to eat.  Plus there is a cool dome car to sit in and watch the train head South.  Here is the route and map: https://www.amtrak.com/silver-service-palmetto-train . And, if you are heading to Learning 2019, I’ll see you in Orlando!

2. Cooking & Chef Experience for Storytelling!  Another Experience I am designing is so exciting. On November 6th, I will be hosting, along with Telly Leung (Aladdin, Rent & Glee) an in-depth Storytelling and Broadway LAB in New York City.

For this LAB, we will be going to see a new comedy/play that MASIE Productions is producing called “SEARED”. It is all about 4 people working at the back of a small restaurant in Brooklyn. And, the storytelling is about the very opinionated Chef, who does not want to cook his special scallops. Actors include Raul Esparza, who you may know from his previous role as the DA on “Law & Order” and the musical “Company.”

We have just a few spaces left in this Experience and you or your colleagues will learn new approaches to Storytelling and enjoy the show and sense the real food that our cast cooks right in front of you! Details and registration at http://www.masie.com

1. Connect and Content at Learning 2019
2. Voice Functions and Voice Response Grows
3. Social Needs More Design: Learning, Media & Workspace

1. Connect and Content at Learning 2019: I look forward to connecting with colleagues from around the world at the upcoming Learning 2019 - Oct 27 to 29, Orlando, Florida.

It will be fun this year to be a keynoter and learner at Learning, with loads of time to meet and mingle with learning professionals. My keynote on Monday morning will focus on Learning Shifts and Changes as Business and Learners change.

There are wonderful keynote presentations from Dr. Sanjay Gupta (CNN), Lindsay Pollack (Multi-Generational Workplace, Michelle Weise (Learning Disruptions) and engaging sessions from learning implementers in our CONSORTIUM and other learning experts in the field.

A complete program is online at http://www.learning2019.com  I look forward to learning with you and your colleagues.

2. Voice Functions and Voice Response Grows: The recent upgrade of Apple’s system for Mac’s and Tablets adds an expanded set of voice-based commands. I can now drive and navigate on my desktop and laptop via voice commands, signaling a move toward more verbal interaction with our devices and systems.

In 2020, the Elliott Masie Learning CONSORTIUM will undertake an innovation project to explore our voice and voice interaction with smart speakers and how that will impact the learning and knowledge function in organizations. If you would like to be part of our experiments, please send me a note to emasie@masie.com

3. Social Needs More Design: Learning, Media & Workspace. My latest free podcast is now online, focusing on how we need to add design to the word “social”, especially as it impacts Social Learning, Social Media, and even Social Workspace. Listen to this 11 minute and 35 second Podcast exploring the role of a “Stumble Through Rehearsal” in Learning and the world of theater. Let’s improve our learning design in waves.

2. Alexa Show Me What You Are Holding - Object Recognition: I have been exploring the new Amazon Alexa “Show”, which has a camera and screen. They just added a feature that will detect via visual recognition an “object” that you hold up to the screen.

Starting with household products, the Show will be able to identify and perhaps order through their service a desired item.

Next, we will see it used for identifying a mechanical part and linking to a how-to or service area.

Here is an article from Amazon detailing this new service that is being rolled out gradually: https://blog.aboutamazon.com/devices/alexa-what-am-i-holding

3. How Learners Describe Their Learning? A quick homework assignment! Ask 5 random employees to describe how they learn.  Just listen to how they describe their learning. A perfect weekly activity for learning professionals. You will be amazed. Send me a note to emasie@masie.com with some aha’s.

RE: “Learning Flow & Pivots” 13 Minute Podcast

How do our learners get to a resource, video, or module? My podcast is focused on “Learning Flow & Pivots”.  What if we could map the FLOW of how a learner arrives a Learning Resource and when/why they PIVOT away? In the age of Learning Data Analytics, these two metrics illustrate the dynamic pathways of learning decisions.

1027 - End of Summer Learning Thoughts

Elliott Masie’s Learning TRENDS - August 29, 2019
#1,027  Updates on Learning, Business & Technology Since 1997.
58,224 Readers - www.masie.com - The MASIE Center.
Host: Learning Innovations LAB - September 16-19 - Saratoga Springs, NY

Special Edition - End of Summer Learning Thoughts!

Elliott Admission:  I loved the end of the summer, even though it was enjoyable at sleep-away camp or with summer jobs.

Why? Because it meant that SCHOOL was starting - in just a few weeks! I would even sing a song, “School Days are Coming”. A new school year, new courses, new teachers and even a new batch of school supplies.

So, as the Summer of 2019 is coming to a close, here are my Learning Thoughts - with some quick updates and questions for my colleagues around the world.

END OF SUMMER LEARNING THOUGHTS - from Elliott Masie.

* The Learning Year  Starts in September: Many of our employees look at the “learning year” starting after Labor Day. Use this to do a push about new and ongoing learning efforts.

* Learning Dashboards?: It would be amazing if we could provide a Dashboard to every employee - reflecting their current learning goals, accomplishments and opportunities. Imagine a fun and personal view of learning.

* What You Read, Viewed or Discovered This Summer: Ask your colleagues, at the team or even enterprise level, to share something they read, viewed or discovered this summer. It will trigger amazing conversations.

* Brand Change - From Student to Learner: I had a personal AHA this summer as I started and dropped out of a university online program. The content was pretty good. But, the learning method was non-motivating.  We want to be learners - not students.

* Explore Innovation: We must actually explore new methods and technologies as learning professionals.  Set up a small Learning Innovation LAB at your company. If you can, join our Learning Innovations LAB in September. Details: www.masie.com

* Focus on Transfer: We are far better at delivering and facilitating learning experiences than supporting the “transfer” of new skills to the actual workflow and workspace. Focus on Transfer - engaging the employee and their manager in deploying new skills.

* Stress is Everywhere: We are living in a time of deep stress. So many of the elements in our lives are shifting, right in front of our eyes. Stress often blocks motivation to learn and engage. Add an “edge” to your programs. “Career Planning in Changing Times”.

* Storytelling, Storytelling and Storytelling! One of my main work themes in the years ahead will be the changing nature of Storytelling at Work. Join us at the Broadway LAB with a visit to “Come from Away” on Oct 2nd. Details: www.masie.com

* Data Analytics Expose Our Habits and Unconscious Bias: Look at learning data with an analytical set of glasses. Check patterns and tilt of who goes to our learning programs. What do we offer out of habit or tradition - rather than business impacts?

* AI, Automation and Smart Tech Vocabulary: Learning professionals can learn the vocabulary and language of these powerful and often hyped changes to workplace technology. Learn to speak about and explore the impact of smart tech.

* Next Chapters for Learning Professionals: Fall is often the time when many learning colleagues consider their next job or chapter. Let’s be more overt about career paths and blocks for our field and explore pathways to business or other zones for our skills.

* Labor Day Celebrates Work: When Labor Day in the United States happens, keep in mind that it is a celebration of Labor and Work. Celebrate the skills, efforts and impact that our workers contribute to our companies and customers.

On a personal note, myself and The MASIE Center are very excited about the start of a new learning year at the end of this summer. We are developing new content and programs in:

* AI, Machine Learning, Automation and Smarter Tech’s Impact on Learning & Work.
* Storytelling: Live, Remote and Media-Based Storytelling at Work.
* Learning Data Analytics: Deeper Understanding of Learning Impacts and Patterns.
* Global Learning: How Learning Is Developing Differently Around the Globe.
* UpSkilling and Developing Futures for Front Line Workers.
* Brain Science and The Human Dimensions of Learning Development.

Our theme in 2020 will be Reimagining Learning and we look forward to evolving our focus as the worlds of business, technology and learning evolve. Stay tuned!

1026 - Student or Learner? Storytelling on 9/11, Broadway and Come from Away

Elliott Masie’s Learning TRENDS - August 8, 2019
#1,026  Updates on Learning, Business & Technology Since 1997
58,209 Readers - www.masie.com - The MASIE Center
Host: Learning Innovations LAB - September 16-19 - Saratoga Springs, NY

1. 9/11 Storytelling & Broadway Experience Announced
2. Student vs. Learner?
3. Learning Innovations - Experimenting with the Future, Now!

1. 9/11 Storytelling & Broadway Experience Announced:  We are delighted to announce a special edition of our Storytelling & Learning Leadership Experience to be held in New York City on 9/11.

After a high energy morning focused on Storytelling Skills, led by actor Telly Leung and Elliott Masie with actors, directors and authors from Broadway, we will go to a matinee performance of  “Come From Away”, the award-winning Canadian musical set in the week following the September 11 attacks that tells the true story of what transpired when 38 planes were ordered to land unexpectedly in the small town of Gander, Canada.

The characters in the musical are based on (and in most cases share the names of) real Gander residents as well as some of the 7,000 stranded travelers they housed and fed.  The musical has been received by audiences and critics as a cathartic storytelling of the capacity for human kindness in even the darkest of times and the triumph of humanity over hate.

This one day Leadership Experience is ideal for a wide range of colleagues in your organization.  Participants have flown into NYC for our previous editions and it is a rare opportunity to explore Storytelling with world-class theater professionals.

RE: “Learning Nudges” Podcast

This month, my podcast is focused on “Learning Nudges”. What if we could provide personal and trusted “nudges” to our employees via technology and our peers in the workplace?
