1. From a TV Show to a Button: Upgrading Changes!
2. Absentee Voting Reminder.

1. From a TV Show to a Button: Upgrading Changes! I had a huge “AHA” this morning. And, it was about how much the world of system changes has evolved in the past 20 years.

This morning, I upgraded my iPhone and iPad to iOS7. This is not a review of these new systems, but about the shift in ease of upgrade. In a nutshell, I went to the Settings menu, pressed one button that said iOS7 Upgrade and waited for 15 minutes while the full operating system of my device was changed, a new code was downloaded and all of my content and apps were still there. One button and 15 minutes later, my device was upgraded.

Now, let me take you back to January 1995. I was asked by Microsoft and Bill Gates to be the host of a TV show called Windows 95, a new operating system they were planning to release in August 1995.  Each month, I flew to Microsoft and hosted a two hour satellite and cable TV show with interviews and demonstrations for techies and geeks around the world. They let me ask almost any question and we had queries come in by fax and email in real time from around the world. For eight months, the technology world and users prepared for the upgrade.

I remember receiving a list of 200 things that could go wrong as a user or organization made the upgrade. Believe it or not, for 100 days, every day I received a FedEx with 25 diskettes (pre CD) to try the latest improvement. And for the most part, applications were not going to work “out of the box” when the Start button appeared for the first time on users’ screens.

Yes, Microsoft and the user community around the world made it through the upgrade. But, how things have changed.

We have come to expect, assume and demand almost seamless upgrades. We want, for the most part, the technology to be in the background and our user experience to be in the foreground. We now have the web and apps for $1.99 rather than programs for $800.  And, in 1995, there were millions of hours of classroom instruction on “Intro to Windows 95 for Users”! I just pushed the button and started to explore this morning.

Yes, we have come a long way - and may user usability always drive innovation and simpler processes!  On my train ride to New York City this morning, I am writing this TRENDS and playing with my operating system. Thanks designers and programmers for the ease of shift!

2. Absentee Voting Reminder: We want to remind our Learning TRENDS readers who are attending Learning 2013 that November 5th is both Election Day and the third day of our conference. U.S. voters should sign up to vote by Absentee Ballot. Here is a link to a site for resources on absentee voting procedures: http://www.learning2013.com/blog/item/absentee.html

791 - MeetUps Meet Learning, 100 Perspectives, Hash Tags at Work

1. Meetups Meet Learning - Let’s Connect!
2. 100 Perspectives On Learning - New List.
3. Hash Tags at Work  - Social Tagging for Context.

1. Meetups Meet Learning - Let’s Connect! Imagine if your organization had a robust daily list of employee “Learning MeetUps” that would be 1 to 2 hour gatherings - at lunch time or during a segment of the day - when 2 to 30 people gathered with the same interest or learning requirement.

For example, the list for tomorrow might include:

- Learning MeetUp for New Salespeople Representing the Alpha Product Line.
- Learning MeetUp for Recent Relocated Employees to Headquarters.
- Learning MeetUp for Folks Improving their Conversational Spanish.
- Learning MeetUp for Understanding New Due Diligence Statute.

These MeetUps would be organized in two ways: either a location where folks could get together for 60 to 120 minutes and support each other’s learning or a shared video space where the same thing might happen globally across the enterprise. Some MeetUps might happen just once, some could have a weekly occurrence or even be on demand.

There are no formal agendas and the participants would rate the value on a 1 to 5 scale.  And, MeetUps would start or go away as situations and requirements change. They are user organized and user shaped.

There is an existing MeetUp site and organization that is sponsoring this process in communities around the world. But, what if we took it inside and extended the MeetUp model as an extended part of the learning atmosphere?

We are so intrigued with this idea that I am adding it to Learning 2013, where we will have a room set up for Learning MeetUps throughout the conference. There will be no agendas but a few sentences outlining what this group could achieve in collaborative conversations. Stay tuned for details and our findings.

2. 100 Perspectives On Learning - New List: Talking about content for Learning 2013, our design team is now in the final 10 days of curating and developing an agenda for over 140 sessions. Today, we posted a list of the almost 100 organizations that have employees who are leading, facilitating, collaborating or teaching at one of these sessions. These are sessions with learning stories, design challenges, 360 views of a learning process or a great debate about a key issue. Check out the list and a sample of the session topics at: http://learning2013.com/blog/item/presenters.html  Soon, as the Program Guide goes to press, we will post a complete agenda for Learning 2013. We now have 1,079 colleagues registered and dozens more signing up every day at http://www.learning2013.com

3. Hash Tags at Work - Social Tagging for Context: The Hash Tag or # sign in front of a few words got popular on Twitter and was recently adopted and embraced by Facebook. We are now seeing #tags being integrated into content at the workplace. For example, as a colleague posts a comment in a shared or social setting like Jive or SharePoint, they may choose to use a current tag and add #policychanges or they may add their own tag with a context or emotion such as #ohmyyy or #SeptemberCycle. One can then either sort on these tags or set up a scroll that shows items with selected tags. There is a mixture of organizational tags in a sort of taxonomy of tagging or “social tags” that come from the individual user and may or may not be adopted by others. Watch for tags as I add my Elliott tag: #trendscan :)

1. Social Media and No Boundaries?
2. 1,000th Registration Today - Yeah!
3. Do You Highlight Phrases in eBooks?

1. Social Media and No Boundaries? Just read a fascinating article by Adam Grant, author of “Give and Take”, on “Why Some People Have No Boundaries Online!” He looks at different styles of how employees either integrate or segregate the social and work aspects of their lives. Here is the link to his article: http://tinyurl.com/labopp4

2. 1,000th Registration Today - Yeah! This morning, our 1,000th colleague registered for Learning 2013!  It is fun to watch dozens of colleagues register every day.  And, we want to celebrate the 1,000th Learning Colleague. She is Kathie Miller, Senior Vice President at Nielsen. We will have a special Disney gift for Kathie when she arrives in Orlando on November 3rd. Join us at Learning 2013! Advanced Registration Discounts at http://www.learning2013.com

3. Do You Highlight Phrases in eBooks? We are exploring the role of eBooks in Learning and Development activities. One question is how much do learners use “highlighting” of words, sentences or sections while using eBooks? I would love to get TRENDS readers’ thoughts on the role of highlighting as you use an eBook for learning. Send me a note to emasie@masie.com

789 - Learn Long and Prosper: Design Session with George Takei

Learning TRENDS by Elliott Masie - Sept 9, 2013.

Special Note: “Live Long & Prosper - Design Session with George Takei”

Design takes time, collaboration and creativity.  Last night, I spent an hour with actor George Takei at the music club 54 Below doing a joint design of his keynote session for Learning 2013. We were both there to hear a concert by friend Telly Leung, so it was the perfect time to design the format and focus of George’s keynote on Tuesday, November 5th.  Here is a look at the design conversation:

As the former Lt. Sulu, largest social media figure on Facebook, accomplished actor and profound storyteller dove into the heart of Learning 2013, we came up with this “map” of his time at Learning 2013:

Storytelling as Focus:  George will recount, in an interview with me, the role of storytelling in his career and the power of stories to inform, influence, change and impact culture.

Social Media and Stories:  We will provide real-time examples of how a single “Post” by George takes off with the over 4 million people in his network.

Images, Humor and Opinion:  George will share how he uses images (often a cartoon or photo) with just a few words to make a posting impactful and forward-able.

From Star Trek to Facebook to Broadway:  We will do an interactive dialogue with George looking at the lessons and aha’s from Star Trek, Facebook and Media, all the way to his new Broadway show.

Storytelling and Change: George would like to share how storytelling can be a powerful tool in changing attitudes, perspectives and policies.  He has been on the forefront of the dialogues about Equality, Justice and Acceptance.  And, what happens when people differ!

Questions from Mobile Devices:  Some of the questions that we will pose to George will come from participants in real time as they use our Mobile App.  George and I will have a large screen near us to pick the questions.

Google Glass:  I have been a source of technology experiences for George, having given him his first tablet and a 3D Printer.  We took some time with the new Google Glass and talked about the role of field experimentation in innovation.  And, how these would have been used on the Enterprise.

Excitement: George is really excited to be a part of Learning 2013.  He will be spending several days with us in Orlando and is intrigued about how our field is leveraging culture, technology and design to share stories, build skills and create change.

Immersion and Prosper: George is going where no Star Trekker has gone before - our Learning event!  So, he wants to immerse.  He is doing prep on our field and will be doing a deep immersion when he gets to Learning 2013.  Don’t be surprised if he comes up to you in the lobby at Walt Disney and starts chatting about what people really want to help them learn.  Welcome George. May we learn together and as learners prosper!

Here is a blog post of our Design Session at: http://www.learning2013.com/blog/item/prosper.html

There are now 937 colleagues registered for Learning 2013, to be held from Nov 3 to 6, 2013 in Orlando.  Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton is our featured keynoter, along with George Takei and others. Registration at http://www.learning2013.com

788 - Crowd Learning Design, Great Webcam, Predicting Registrations

1. “Crowd” Design Learning Activities?
2. A GREAT Webcam for Webinars.
3. Advance Discounts - Understanding Travel Realities.

1. “Crowd” Design Learning Activities? What if we gave a “CROWD” of experienced workers in your organization a challenge to “DESIGN” a totally new learning activity?  What if we asked 500 managers to collaboratively design a new “manager skills” program?  What if we went from a few SMEs to harnessing the “Wisdom of the Crowd” as a design strategy?

I have become intrigued with experiments to shift from a single designer and SME to tasking a larger or enormous “crowd” of employees with the design process for a new learning activity. This will challenge the traditional role and power assumptions of instructional designers and even subject matter experts. But, it actually takes the idea of crowd-sourcing and integrates it with UserContent, Social and Collaborative Learning and On-The-Job Training.

Here is an article that I just wrote about Crowd Learning Design and some of the upcoming experiments that we are planning: http://www.learning2013.com/blog/item/crowd.html

2. A GREAT Webcam for Webinars: I lead about 8 to 12 webinars each week - on almost every tool and video conferencing system.  So, I am always on the lookout for an improvement in webcams.  This week, I hit the jackpot.  I am now using a new webcam: Logitech C930e Webcam for Business.

While I don’t endorse or evaluate products, on a personal note, I am in love with this webcam. It has instantly taken the clarity and focus of our video-based learning and collaboration programs up major notches.  Here are a few of the features:

* Full HD 1080p Video Calling.
* H.264/SVC Video Compression.
* 90° Field of View.
* 4X Zoom in 1080p.
* Carl Zeiss Certified Lens.
* Integrated Autofocus.
* External Privacy Shutter.
* Built-In Dual Stereo Mics.

I bought mine at: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/977620-REG/logitech_960_000971_c930e_webcam_usb.html

3. Advance Discounts - Understanding Travel Realities:  We are very excited about the registration levels for our upcoming Learning 2013.  We are now at almost 900 registrations. We took 35 registrations today alone.

Normally, on Sept 3rd we would raise the rates approximately $100 per person. But, I have received so many emails from colleagues asking if we could keep the discounted rate for several more weeks as corporate travel policies are more difficult.  Folks want a bit more time to get their permissions to come to Learning 2013, and we listened.

Given our strong registration rate and the tightened complexity of travel approvals, we have issued a new Advance Rate, which will be active until late October.  While this causes some anxiety when ordering our cool event bags, name badges and appropriate amounts of coffee, everyone in Learning must be more agile to allow for more flexibility and last-minute registrations for all activities. We have also extended the ability of our participants to request Corporate Billing and, if needed, cancel closer to the event without penalty.

Please access our website at http://www.learning2013.com to take advantage of the Discounts with your Advance Registration Rate.  And, we look forward to learning and collaborating with you in Orlando.

787: Pecha Kucha - 20 Slides; A Time to Kill?, Work and Social Media

1. Pecha Kucha: 20 Slides, 20 Seconds, Sit Down!
2. Time to Kill? Memories and More.
3. Work and Social Media Rules?

1. Pecha Kucha: 20 Slides, 20 Seconds, Sit Down! Can a learning colleague tell a rich story in 20 slides, each auto-advancing every 20 seconds? That’s called Pecha Kucha and one of the fun formats we will use at Learning 2013!

I experimented with Pecha Kucha at Learning 2007 and have used it every few years as an alternative format. These can be focused on a professional effort or share a learning story from our personal lives.  It is amazing how participants can share a powerful and rich story in 6 Minutes and 40 Seconds!  So, we will be adding Learning Pecha Kucha sessions at our conference in November.  And, at the end of 400 seconds, the presentation is over and the leader sits down :)

If you would like to see some suggestions and formats for leveraging Pecha Kucha - go to http://www.learning2013.com/blog/item/pechakuncha-20-slides-x-20-seconds.html

2. Time to Kill? Memories and More. MASIE Productions will be one of the co-producers of a new Broadway play, “A Time to Kill”, based on the book by John Grisham.  Yesterday, we went to the first rehearsal and it is now gearing up for an opening in October.  I would love to get some data from Learning TRENDS readers about their memories of either the “A Time to Kill” novel or movie.  If you can take a few minutes, share your memories with me at http://www.surveygizmo.com/s3/1344643/Time

We will keep you informed as the design and presentation of “A Time to Kill” comes to Broadway in just 6 weeks.

3. Work and Social Media Rules?  So, what are the rules in your organization about employees sharing information about the company in social media?  Recently, a number of organizations have added sections to the Employee Handbook and/or New Hire Orientation, addressing rules and norms about social media mentions of the organization.  Some organizations have organized guidelines to coach employees about what is appropriate, questionable or not allowable on Social Media.  For example, a sales person posts that they are on a trip to a new city on Facebook.  Might that be monitored by your competition to see if you are visiting key sales prospects?  Or, if a person gets a tough performance review, would their venting perhaps impact the recruitment efforts of new talent if viewed by prospects?  Watch for more social media guidelines and even “Big Data” feedback scoreboards to provide employees with an aggregated view of their postings.

786 - 40% of Webinar Folks Are No-Shows; Procter & Gamble Learning Honored

Learning TRENDS by Elliott Masie - August 22, 2013.

1. The Magic 40% Figure on Webinar No-Shows :)
2. Procter & Gamble’s Learning Honored.

1. The Magic 40% Figure on Webinar No-Shows :) There are some unspoken trends in every field. In the world of webinars, it is the 40% No-Show Predictor. Almost every organization reports that AT LEAST 40% of the people who register or reserve time for a one-hour webinar will become no-shows of the live event. This may change if it is more of a management meeting or there are real consequences for non-attendance. But, in most situations, if 100 people reserve a space, expect about 40% or more to become no-shows. Some of the reasons may be:

* If the event is streamable, many choose to view/listen to that at a more convenient time.
* Some love the fast forward options of a non-live version.
* Stuff Happens! Daily business realities conflict with the scheduled webinar.
* “I Won’t Be Missed” - many workers feel webinars are more and more optional.
* “It is Too Long!” - there are many 12-minute topics that get stretched to 60 minutes.

And, there may be other reasons. I’d love to hear from Learning TRENDS readers about this number in their organization. Send me a note about your own experience with the Webinar “No Show Rate” and I’ll summarize them into a non-attributable summary next week. Send it to emasie@masie.com

2. Procter & Gamble’s Learning Honored: We are honored to present the Learning 2013 Spotlight Award to Procter & Gamble and Ann Schulte, their Global Learning & Development Leader.

P&G is a 176 year old corporation and the learning team is engaged in a learning transformation.

“Ann Schulte from Procter and Gamble will be discussing how she and her team are driving the innovation necessary to build successful leaders over the course of a career. Ann has been involved with transforming P&G’s global curriculum, rebranding learning in a build-from-within culture, and engaging both learners, and leaders as teachers, with new methods and technologies.”

785 - Goodbye eLearning? Jane Pauley on Boomers; Wearable Performance Support

Learning TRENDS by Elliott Masie - August 20, 2013.

1. eLearning and Instructional Designer Titles “Evaporating”
2. Jane Pauley on Boomers in the Workplace: Video.
3. Wearable Performance Support - Let’s Talk More!

1. eLearning and Instructional Designer Titles “Evaporating”:  I regularly scan and analyze the various databases of learning, training and performance colleagues. Recently, while looking at titles, I noticed two phrases that are decreasing in presence:

* “e-Learning”
* “Instructional Designer”

I was surprised by the size of the shift, but not by the vector. Let’s take a look at each trend shift:

eLearning: Fewer corporate workplaces are using the phrase eLearning actively. Many are just calling the full range of opportunities “learning”.  Others are moving towards greater definition of the process, e.g. Virtual Classrooms, Webinars, eBooks, MOOCs or Online Courses.  We are using Learning for all of our programs rather than adding the “e”. Ironically, I am credited, or cursed, with helping to introduce and popularize eLearning in the mid 1990’s. But, times change!

Instructional Designer: There are many fewer instructional designers as full time employees at major corporations.  Some of this has shifted to suppliers and vendors. And, some of the content is being curated, organized and published by people who are defined as content focused but not trained or tasked as “instructional designers”.  Some organizations want to produce learning and performance content but not in a traditional instructional envelope.

I have been using Learning Producer as an alternative title, which focuses on a wider range of content elements, including video, mobile and social/collaborative.  And, we hope that colleges and universities bring their language to a closer alignment with the greater job and career opportunities for colleagues that have design and analysis skills.

2. Jane Pauley on Boomers in the Workplace - New Video: Jane Pauley will be a keynote speaker at Learning 2013, focusing on changing roles and careers of Boomers. We (since I am a full-fledged Boomer) are working longer, shifting careers more often, creating “encore” chapters and often returning to organizations in new roles and contracts. Learning programs for Boomers are also changing.

Here is a great video that NBC Today did of Jane Pauley talking about the challenges of Boomers: http://www.learning2013.com/blog/item/pauley.html

3. Wearable Performance Support - Let’s Talk More! After 15 days with my Google Glass, I am more inclined to see it as a Performance Support tool for an occupation or industry - rather than as a pure consumer product. Imagine a doctor, a lab technician, a pilot, a tour guide or stock trader being able to use Wearable Performance Support: the idea of blending real-time Learning and Knowledge at the Moment of Need. This week, we will be testing Google Glass in the MASIE Center LAB as a wearable job aid. Stay tuned.

784 - Search History Patterns; Time Slips in Seminars?

Learning TRENDS by Elliott Masie - August 16, 2013.
#784 - Updates on Learning, Business & Technology.
56,145 Readers - www.masie.com - twitter: emasie - The MASIE Center.
Host: Learning 2013 - Nov 3 to 6 - Orlando, Florida - www.learning2013.com

1. Time Slips in Seminars - Graphical MIX Models!
2. Search History: Interesting “Big” Data.

1. Time Slips in Seminars - Graphical MIX Models! How many times have you been in a seminar or breakout at a conference and the instructor tells you, “there will lots of time at the end for questions - so hold them until then.” Time slips away and, at the end, there are still 3 slides to cover and no time for questions or participation. It happens at every event and as a producer, I wanted to experiment with some new models of Time and Activity MIX.

So, our Design Team put together “Learning MIX” graphic pie charts for each model of a breakout.  Learner Interaction is in one color. Trainer or Facilitator presenting is in another color. And, other activities are also represented graphically. A quick glance shows what percentage of time in the 60 minutes will be allocated to each type of activity. Learners can personalize their experience by gravitating to the “MIX” that matches their need or style on that topic.  Some might want to really get deep Step-by-Step walk-throughs and others might want a wide-ranging participant conversation.

Check out these graphical Learning “MIX” graphics at: http://www.learning2013.com/blog/item/learning-mix-graphics.html

We are using these graphics as a core part of our design process with each facilitator - who can be highly creative in activities - within the mix promised to learners.  And, we will post them in each breakout room at Learning 2013 as a shared “contract” for time allocation.

2. Search History - Interesting “Big” Data: As I work on our new “Big Learning Data” book with ASTD, the topic of Search History comes up. For me, one of the most interesting items to consider and analyze is my own search history - from both mobile devices and office machines. Over a day or over a year, my Search History is an interesting barometer of:

* Areas of My Curiosity.
* Knowledge Zones Emerging.
* People I Have Met or Heard About.
* Topics Difficult to Search Easily For.
* Repetitive Inquiries.
* Items I Choose Never to Memorize.
* Changing Content or Numeric.

I believe that we will see more tools for both the individual and perhaps also for the organization to use to analyze and interpret one’s search history.  This will raise interesting transparency “Big Learning Data” questions.  One colleague only searches using his personal mobile phone - rather than have his search items trackable at work.

On a personal note, I often chat with passengers next to me on airplanes about their own Search History patterns.  Without asking to see their history, we get into an intriguing conversation about how they approach knowledge access.

Note: We now have over 615 colleagues registered for Learning 2013!  And, there are over 20 corporations that are sending groups to Learning 2013 as a team learning experience. Dates: Nov 3 to 6, 2013. Early registration and hotel discounts available at http://www.learning2013.com

1. Big Learning Data Concerns? We are in the final days of writing a new book, Big Learning Data, in cooperation with ASTD. I need your help!

As more and more data is available and “mined” on employee’s learning and other activities, what concerns might they have? What might be a “Big Learning Data” Code of Conduct that an organization might create?

For example, if an employee takes a Myers Briggs survey, how is that data used now - or in 5 years?  What degree of transparency is stated or assumed about the use of Big Learning Data?

I would love your comments and thoughts as I write the final and important chapter of the new “Big Learning Data” book. Please send a confidential note to emasie@masie.com

2. NBCUniversal’s Talent Lab: ReBranding Learning! We believe that it is time for our field to approach “ReBranding Learning”.  As fewer people take traditional courses, as more content is driven by user choice and as career patterns shift, organizations have to be ready to take a fresh look at the “Brand” of Learning.

We are honored to be featuring Jayzen Patria, Executive Director of Talent Development and NBCUniversal’s Talent Lab, to lead an event-wide discussion about “ReBranding Learning” at Learning 2013. We will ask every participant and organization to take a creative and strategic look at their brand - from titles to assumptions to even graphical representation of learning.

Jayzen is leading the efforts at NBCUniversal in this arena with their new Talent Lab. More details at: http://www.learning2013.com/blog/item/nbcuniversal.html

3. Yes, Collaborator Won - Picture in Action: Yesterday, I shared my excitement about a big race for our horse, Collaborator. Well, he won! It was so exciting to see the results of months of training, care and coaching result in a historic win at Saratoga Springs Racetrack - as he led the field of 10 horses from the gate to the finish line over a mile. Collaborator was also Competitive. And his winning picture is at: http://www.masie.com/collaborator-8-12-13.html

Hundreds of TRENDS readers sent him good wishes yesterday by email. He thanks you and is taking a day of rest and relaxation before getting ready for his next race in a few weeks.

Note: The MASIE Center will be closed on Wednesday, August 14th. We are taking a van to bring our entire team of employees to a matinee of our Tony Winning Musical: Kinky Boots.

782 - NASCAR Pit Crew Learning; Chromecast Video Sharing; Collaborator Runs Today

Learning TRENDS by Elliott Masie - August 12, 2013.

1. Quick - Change Those NASCAR Tires, Safely!
2. Collaborator, Masie Horse, Races Today.
3. Chromecast from Google Opens Up Classroom Graphics.

1. Quick - Change Those NASCAR Tires, Safely! A NASCAR Pit Crew will be set up outside the hotel at Learning 2013. Participants will be suited up in safety jumpers and trained in how to work as a team of 8 on changing the tires of a NASCAR vehicle - safely and quickly. Some teams will get the tires changed in under a minute. Power wrenches, car lifts and new tires will be part of the skills participants will learn.  And, our Pit Crew coaches will video tape each attempt, providing collaboration and technical skill feedback. We will have prizes for the best corporate teams and random teams. And, our 30 Under 30 Team Members will compete against our Learning Veterans.

Why? Learning and collaboration with a physical and competitive task is a great way to step into skilling in a new way. At a NASCAR Race, the final margin may be less than 12 seconds between the first two cars. So, time for pit crew change is critical and deeply depends on team cooperation. Check out the story and pictures for our no-cost Pit Crew Learning 2013 Adventure at: http://www.learning2013.com/blog/item/pitcrew2.html

2. Collaborator, Masie Horse, Races Today: While on the topic of racing, today is an exciting day for me. Collaborator, one of the MASIE Center thoroughbred horses, is racing in historic Saratoga Springs in the 4th race. He is a 3 year old horse and his is a special race for “maidens” who have never won. He will go 1 mile on the grass, competing with 11 other great thoroughbreds.  Am I nervous and excited, yes! My goals: may it be a healthy race for him and may his performance improve. Wish him well. You can send a note to emasie@masie.com and I will pass on your wishes in the paddock area before the race. Pictures of him and the racetrack are at: http://www.masie.com/collaborator-8-12-13.html

3. Chromecast from Google Opens Up Classroom Graphics: One of the technologies we are playing with at our Learning LAB is a small device that plugs into a TV’s HDMI port, allowing anyone with a mobile device to display video or other content with permissions. We are configuring some classrooms here at The MASIE Center with Chromecast to mock up how learners in a session could easily share personalized content with the entire group. The price is right at $35 and it appears to give real “affordances” to teachers, trainers, designers and learners - in both classrooms and meetings. Details at: http://www.google.com/chromecast

Note: Our Learning 2013 participants are quickly filling the rooms at Disney’s Coronado Springs Hotel. Please register early. You can make your registration for Learning 2013, receive the Early Discounts and request invoicing and payment later. Details at http://www.learning2013.com

781 - Facebook - 1 Size Fits 1 Learning; Find Me a Cool Bag, Please!

1. Facebook: One-Size-Fits-One Learning.
2. Adventure Based Learning - Re-branding.
3. Find Me a Cool Bag, Please!

1. Facebook: One-Size-Fits-One Learning: I was so impressed with the phrase that the Director of Learning at Facebook is using that it stopped me in my tracks:

“One-Size-Fits-One” Learning!

Stu Crabb, Facebook Director of Learning, along with Mike Rognlien, “Builder of Awesome Managers”, will detail their shift in learning at a keynote at Learning 2013. “By ruthlessly prioritizing, saying NO to the ‘traditional’ demands of “training department” and really enabling people to own and drive their own development, Facebook’s L&D team is transforming what has traditionally been a curriculum-based approach to learning into one that is dynamic, current, and ‘One-Size-Fits-One’.”

We will interview Stu and Mike, as well as have them lead an interactive session with Learning 2013 participants, detailing how they are shifting the learning culture at Facebook. Details at: http://www.learning2013.com/blog/item/facebook.html

2. Adventure Based Learning - Re-branding: I just finished a short video on “Adventures & Learning”.  What if we packaged some of our courses, programs and “experiences” as adventures? I was impressed by a recent book on 1/2 day to 2 day Travel Adventures that one might do as a skill building activity - and wondered what it would be like if we applied that to our Learning Programs. Imagine if you offered a “Walk in the Shoes of the Customer at a Store” adventure. It is a fun concept, and I am wearing my new “adventure vest” in the video:

Adventures in Learning Video.

3. Find Me a Cool Bag, Please! I am bored with those black bags that we all get at conferences and seminars, which many of us leave in our hotel rooms.  So, I asked my design team to come up with a very different, fun and high energy bag that reflected zip, brightness and would be brought home by participants - even to give to their kids. Here is the cool bag that we found:

780 - George Takei Video Interview; Google Glass First Days

Learning TRENDS by Elliott Masie - August 5, 2013.

1. George Takei CBS Interview!
2. First Days of Google Glass Experiments.

1. George Takei CBS Interview! There was a great interview on CBS on Sunday with George Takei, our Learning 2013 Keynoter. George talks about his role as one of the most widely read and followed storytellers on Social Media and his family’s history at the internment camps. Check it out at: http://www.learning2013.com/blog/item/george.html

2. First Days of Google Glass Experiments: For the past four days, I have been walking around New York City, Washington and Saratoga Springs wearing my new pair of Google Glass. The MASIE Center is experimenting with Google Glass to look for possible “affordances” that might surface for the learning, development and workplace performance world. I am also curious how it might apply to my Broadway investments as well. Here are some early observations:

* Fascinated to be able to watch and record video through Google Glass.
* Many people freaked out and walking away from possible recording.
* Calling up a Google Question and Site has been powerful - even adding walking directions.
* Wish it worked with my 3G - when out of range of wireless.
* The NY Times and Elle Magazine Apps are intriguing views of how content might appear.
* Watch for “Driving while Glassing” stories soon.
* Imagine how a learner might use it to drill down for more content.
* What if a Mandarin speaker could watch Kinky Boots and get subtitles in Google Glass.
* Weight Watchers will have a food recognition and in your ear whisper app soon.
* Like all new tech, the apps and affordances follow.

We will have a video of our experiments later this week for TRENDS readers - and a Google Glass Learning LAB at Learning 2013.

1. Memory in the Age of Google?
2. 30 Minute Video on Learning Marketplace 2013.

1. Memory in the Age of Google: How do our learners approach “memorizing” differently when the content is also online?  When do we (and our learners) memorize at deep memory, at light memory, at recall, and when do we just want to know how to get to the knowledge - online at the moment of need.

I am delighted that one of my favorite researchers in this area, Betsy Sparrow from Columbia University, will be a keynote speaker on the opening night of Learning 2013 - exploring “Knowledge in the Age of Google.” We will explore these key issues interactively with Betsy:

* How do we “talk about” different types of memory?  When is something in deep, instant recall?  When is it refreshable?
* How are learners “sorting” knowledge when it is also online externally or on a Corporate Intranet?
* If a learner can “look it up”, are they less likely to memorize it?

Info on Betsy Sparrow and a link to a video of her from PBS at: http://www.learning2013.com/blog/item/memory.html

2. 30 Minute Video on Learning Marketplace 2013: We are pleased to offer this free video on Learning Marketplace 2013 - exploring trends in how organizations are shifting how they buy learning systems, content, services and products.  Watch it at: http://www.learning2013.com/live

778 - eBooks for Learning Results; Dennis Dammerman - Award Winner Passes

1. Results from eBooks for Learning Survey - Digital Futures?
2. Dennis Dammerman - Award Winner Passes.

1. Results from eBooks for Learning Survey - Digital Futures?: We now have results from 445 organizations about the current and future plans for using eBooks for Learning! Could learning groups take a printed manual, shift it to an eBook version - and possibly add video, assessment, social commenting and even performance support? Could we change an eBook into a L(learning)Book? Check out the survey results at:

http://www.masie.com/ebook2013

And, we are pursuing an eBook for Learning project in our Learning CONSORTIUM, plus eBook for Learning Lab at Learning 2013.  For more info, send a note to emasie@masie.com

2. Dennis Dammerman - Award Winner Passes: One of the great leaders in the world of business and human resources died on Tuesday.  Dennis Dammerman, who was the CFO and Vice Chair of General Electric, passed away after a brilliant career in business and community service.  Dennis received our Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006 - honoring his amazing support for learning, development and talent at GE.  Dennis was also a colleague and friend of mine, serving with me on the Skidmore College Board of Trustees.

When he received his award from us, I asked Dennis what he thought about the term ROI, as used in Learning.  He smiled and said in his very direct and crisp way, “I don’t expect ROI from you learning folks. If I wanted a return in dollars, I would give to other groups. What I want from learning, is a return of Talent, Human Capital and Readiness to Perform and Grow.”

Ironically, I was hosting a group of 40 rising executives from GE at our center yesterday and we were talking about Dennis, as an example of great leadership and concern for the growth of talent. I ended the meeting at 5 pm, walked upstairs to my office and got a note that Dennis had passed away. I returned to tell the visiting executives about the sad news. Dennis, you made a difference in the world of learning!
