952 - Learning Systems Ready for Changing Learners? Video vs. PowerPoint in Webinars!

Learning TRENDS by Elliott Masie - February 17, 2016.
#952 - Updates on Learning, Business & Technology.
57,598 Readers - www.masie.com - twitter: emasie - The MASIE Center.

1. Learning Systems: Are They Ready for Changing Learners and Learning?
2. Video vs PowerPoint: Centerpiece of Online Learning Dialogues?
3. Format Question: Plain Text or HTML with Graphics for Learning TRENDS?

1. Learning Systems: Are They Ready for Changing Learners and Learning?

I am hearing a powerful and disruptive message from CLO’s and Learning Leaders about their LMS, LCMS and Learning Systems:

“We need our Learning Systems to do enterprise learning, BUT our learning approaches and learners are changing quicker than our LMS and LCMS.  We need to do more curation, personalization, workflow support and agile video, YET our LMS and LCMS can’t make these changes in agile time.  So, what do we do?”

This is not a knock on the LMS and LCMS marketplace, but it is a wake-up call.  We are hearing a clear direction that includes:

* Burying the LMS as an internal system and adding new “layers” for social, curation and video elements.
* Adding Learning Apps as a new front end, customized to the learning needs of specific learners, which work with the LMS in the background.
* Shifting to non-Learning Systems, such as Talent ERP’s, to handle much of what was traditionally done with the LMS.
* Creating new Learner and Performance Metrics to take a more Data Analysis approach around the LMS.

And, this conversation gets very intriguing when you add the phrase “Machine Learning”!  How will the emerging world of Machine Learning deal with legacy and non-agile Learning Systems?

Two requests:

A: I would love to hear from Learning TRENDS colleagues with your perspective on the shifting world of Learning Systems and your own organization.  Send me a private message to emasie@masie.com

B: You and your team are invited to our updated event - Learning Systems & Tools - that I will lead with Richard Culatta in Chicago from April 19th to 20th.  Limited space, so register soon with discounted rates: http://www.masie.com

2. Video vs PowerPoint: Centerpiece of Online Learning Dialogues? We have been experimenting at The MASIE Center Learning LAB with shifting the role of video in webinars and online classes.  For the past 20 years, PowerPoint has held a central role in most webinars.  Yet, the reason I want to be part of a live learning event with distributed contacts is to have an interactive and dynamic conversation.

We have been experimenting with software like Zoom, which provides a “Hollywood Square” model of stacking learners, without the big PPT slide box.  And, I have been using a Virtual Background to share key headlines over my shoulder, like a television newscaster might have a story title.  It is intriguing and working.  Stay tuned for some of our upcoming experiments.

3. Format Question: Plain Text or HTML with Graphics for Learning TRENDS?  I have a question for our tens of thousands of Learning TRENDS readers about the format of these news notes.  For the past 20 years, I have used a simple, text-only format for our Learning TRENDS notes, just like this one.

Recently, we started to use an HTML format, which added pictures, font colors and more. I tried this shift, based on comments from some readers that it would be cool to add more “richness”.

Yet, we received the opposite feedback from many readers, including a host of people who were not opening the TRENDS notes, since they appeared to be more like standard e-ads.

So, I would love to get some feedback from you, the readers.  Could you send me a note to emasie@masie.com with a preference of format (HTML or Text)?  There might even be a format choice that we could use.  Thanks!

Elliott Masie

951 - Snow Day Learning and Collaboration?

Learning TRENDS by Elliott Masie - February 9, 2017
#951 - Snow Day Learning; Two Types of Curation; London & Dublin
www.masie.com - Twitter: @emasie - The MASIE Center - 57,293 Readers

* Snow Day Learning:  It is a “Snow Day” right now in New York City and many of my colleagues (including our local staff) have been asked to work from home today.   When we were in school, Snow Day meant a day off.  But, what about a Snow Day for Work?  Is it an opportunity (especially for my friends in wintery regions) for a different learning or collaboration window?

So, the weather is bad and gives employees an option (or mandate) to work from home today.  Beyond doing the normal day’s work, why not have a Snow Day Plan ready to do some unique development, learning or collaboration?  Here are a few images of what a Snow Day might include:

- Let’s Work a Problem:  Pick 1 or 2 problems facing the organization and invite folks into small group Problem Workout rooms - for 30 to 90 minutes - to divergently develop fresh approaches.  All it takes is a facilitator, your normal webinar/video tools and a curator to capture and post outcomes.

- Lunch Lessons from the C Suite: Invite the CEO or other C Level officer to be interviewed by 4 folks from different offices (from their home) - with some questions sent back from the field.

- Snow Day Mentoring Meetups: Create a connection process to link employees to others with expertise or experience - as a Snow Day Meetup.

Snow Days actually were some of my BEST Learning Days in School.  The curriculum was replaced with cool projects, reading and conversations with friends and family at home. Make your Snow Days Learning filled and Collaboration Rich!

* Curation: Mine or the Organization’s?:  As The MASIE Center develops our Curation and Learning framework, it is clear that there are two parallel curator processes at work.  The Organization might provide the official curation of content from many resources, with recommendations and even personalization for each worker.  And, that could be an effective way of adding order to the Panorama of content choices out there.

BUT, the learner may create (and is already creating) their own Curation.  They are sorting content, finding colleagues to help rate choices and building their own curation perspective.  We are investigating how the Organizational Curation and Personal Curation can work together in an honorable and trusted fashion.  This will be one of our topics in the upcoming Curation & Learning LAB session in March.  http://www.masie.com

MASIE Heading to Dublin & London in March:  I will be meeting with learning colleagues in both Dublin and London in the middle of March.  If you are in either of those locations and would want to connect, send me a note to emasie@masie.com

950 - "Fake News", "Alternative Facts" and Learning

Learning TRENDS by Elliott Masie - January 25, 2017
#950: “Fake News” & “Alternative Facts”
www.masie.com - Twitter: @emasie - The MASIE Center - 57,286 Readers

“FAKE NEWS” & “Alternative Facts”: Learning Implications?

The current media and political conversations about FAKE NEWS and Alternative Facts are already impacting the world of Learning and Development.

I am in Germany this week and was asked by six different learning leaders if we need to address “FAKE NEWS” in the workplace.  Our workers receive and scan the widest range of information sources from in and outside the organization.  Some of those stories, even if coming from what seems like a trusted source such as a TED Talk or major publication, may contain content that the organization sees as “Fake” or Not Based on Facts.

How does an organization “CURATE” content and provide context, ratings or, in some cases, repudiation for high volume “FAKE NEWS”? One colleague from The Netherlands is asking his IT department to provide a trending report of the key external news stories accessed by workers - to guide their response.

And, in some cases the news is truly “FAKE NEWS”.  It might be a phony website that is created by a competitor or ex-employee, aimed at discrediting the organization

Or, it might be what has just surfaced as an “ALTERNATIVE FACTS” model.  Imagine how an employee might react to a statement by management that directly contradicts their experience dealing with customers or products.  Watch for the phrase “Alternative Facts” to start to surface in workplace discussion.

Your Thoughts Please:  I would love to get reactions from the widest set of Learning TRENDS readers about the possible implications for “FAKE NEWS or Alternative Facts” reactions. This is not a political issue; rather, it is a shift in how everyday people are using or evaluating content’s truthfulness.  Send me an email to emasie@masie.com

949 - Gadgets, Tech & Learning: Update from CES Vegas

Learning TRENDS by Elliott Masie - January 11, 2017
#949 - Gadgets, Tech & Learning: Update from CES Vegas
www.masie.com - Twitter: @emasie - The MASIE Center - 57,272 Readers

- Gadgets, Tech & Learning: Update from CES Vegas:  Each year, for the past decade, I have curated reports from my colleagues attending the CES Show in Las Vegas, where emerging gadgets, technology and systems are previewed and announced.  I have been smiling at the range of announcements made at CES that may have impact on the world of workplace learning:

- Sound Canceling and Connected Mini-Earbuds:  Nuhera IQBuds are intriguing earbuds that can be worn in a busy and noisy workplace.  They serve multiple purposes, providing a lower noise level in the ears, connecting to phones and wireless and still allowing clear conversations with a person right in front of the user.  Multiple microphones in each earbud and an algorithm of noise canceling software could be an asset for both communication and real time support information in employee ears in those high noise environments.   Info at: http://www.nuheara.com

- VR Without VR Viewer - Projected Mixed Reality - Project Ariana:  Here is a huge step forward in the ability to deliver Mixed Reality (VR, AR and More) to a group of employees without using wearable goggles.  Project Ariana, from Razer, is aimed at teens for gaming projection in a basement, but has huge implications for adding Mixed Reality Learning and Simulation displays in our workplace.  It is emerging technology and you should check it out at: http://www.razerzone.com/project-ariana

- Robotics: Learning to Read Pudding:  I am convinced that Robots will play a much larger part of our world of workplace performance and learning.  Here is an announcement of “Pudding” - which is a friendly support presence to assist a child in mastering reading skills.  It has a combination of Robotics, AI and Performance Support in a “cute” presence.  Information at: http://www.roobo.com/en/

- More CES Gadget/Tech Trends to Follow:
* Expansion of “Talk To” Systems (eg. Alexa, Siri and Google’s Home)
* Paper Thin Monitors - Mountable on the Workplace Walls
* Self-Driving Cars and Assisted Mobility
* Mixed Reality Expands Beyond VR and AR
* Health and Wellness Based Wearable Technologies

Check out several of the summaries of CES that are online.  Here is one that I read:

948 - Content Reminders for January? AI App for Weight Loss, Research Intern

Learning TRENDS by Elliott Masie - January 3, 2017
#948 - Content Reminders for New Year, AI App for Weight Loss, Research Intern at MASIE
www.masie.com - Twitter: @emasie - The MASIE Center - 57,265 Readers

I hope that our Learning TRENDS Colleagues around the world had a healthy and safe New Years.  2017 will clearly be a time of change, disruption and shifts in our businesses, marketplaces and lifestyles.  I am excited for the conversations that we have here on Learning TRENDS and look forward to engaging with you in the coming year.

- Content Reminders for the New Year?  When I came to work this morning, as the first day of 2017, I wished that I had a New Year Reminder for Content.  Imagine if we each received very targeted and efficient reminders of key content, knowledge, skills and focuses on our first day back, at the start of a new year, a new month or even a new week.

Whether you are 66 like me or a 23 year old, reminders in a digital age could be very powerful.  A sort of thread around your finger as a key content reminder.  Remember, the “e” in e-Learning can be about Evolving, just like our memories.

- AI App for Weight Loss:  At the start of the year, many folks turn to diets and exercise for support in learning and implementing healthier lifestyles.  Check out the app “Noom”, which combines machine learning, AI, personalized feedback and coaching to users.  Here is an interesting article in Fast Company about “Noom”

- Learning Research Intern at MASIE Center: We are looking for a great intern who will participate in learning research at The MASIE Center in the coming year.  You can be a graduate student, undergraduate or self-study student who can spend several months in Saratoga Springs working on learning research, with a wide range of corporations and government agencies.  Send a note to me at emasie@masie.com

- Learning Innovations LAB Added in February:  We have filled our Learning Innovations LAB in January. So, we added a new session that I will lead from Feb 1 to 3 in Saratoga Springs, NY.  It is a very high energy, hands-on exploration of new and emerging learning innovations, technology and methodologies.  Space is limited and online registration is open at: http://www.masie.com

947 - Global: Visual Translation, Captions for Learning & Engagement!

Learning TRENDS by Elliott Masie - December 19, 2016
#947 - Global:
Visual Translation, Captions for Learning & Engagement!

Global Learning: Visual Translate, Caption & Engagement!

I am sending today’s TRENDS from Venice as part of a 2 week trip to Saudi Arabia, Dubai, and now Italy. Here are some perspectives about working, learning, and collaborating on a global basis. As our organizations and colleagues are working across the globe, we need to innovate our approaches. A few examples and studies:

- Visual Translation on Your Phone!  I have been using the Camera/Visual Translation capacity in the Google Translate App. I can point my phone at words in Italian and my phone will do an Augmented Reality /Translation into English. It is different and exciting to have that form of real time translation.

I pointed it at a projected PowerPoint and could read most of the text in English. And, it works in a wide range of languages that are expanding. I have used German, Spanish, and Italian and was impressed with the real-time effecthttp://tinyurl.com/cameratranslate

- Captions for Learning:

Learners who are learning in a second language can often find amazing benefit in the optional use of Captions in learning content - from documents to video. In addition, learners that have a learning disability, which may be as many as 15% of the workforce, may also benefit from Captions. Here is a recent research paper from Oregon State University on learning captioning.  Check it out at: http://tinyurl.com/learningcaptions

- Global Learning Engagement: Working as a learning professional on a global basis requires balancing your own teaching style with the cultural norms of a country that you are visiting (in person or virtually). While I was delivering my keynote speech on Learning Changes in Saudi Arabia for SABIC, I wanted to engage the 150 executives in a discussion about their favorite teachers. I asked them to stand up in the briefing auditorium and engage in a dialogue about their most memorable teacher as they grew up. The room came alive - sharing their own stories about storytelling and teaching. Don’t be afraid to ask global colleagues to engage! Here is a picture from that meeting:

946 - Lights, Cameras, and Microphones for Video Effectiveness!

Learning TRENDS by Elliott Masie - December 5, 2016
#946 -  Lights, Cameras, and Microphones for Video Effectiveness!
57,248 Readers - www.masie.com - Twitter: @emasie - The MASIE Center

Special:  Lights, Camera and Microphones for Video Effectiveness!

As more of our communication, collaboration and content is done via video, often from webcams in our offices, we have to think about our lighting, sound, and lens to give the viewer the best experience.  Yet, many people’s video image has poor lighting, camera focus, and even sound capture.  Here are some of the tools and approaches that we use at the MASIE Learning LAB to enhance our video quality, right from our offices:

- Small Lights Right On Your Desktop!  The lighting in your office may be great for reading, but your face often appears poorly illuminated in the camera.  So, we have added Video Lighting to desktops and screens.   First, let me show you a cute set of lights that sit on either side of your desktop monitor.  They are from Videssence:

- Studio Lights in Your Office! My office has a large screen, so I have added Studio type lights to add larger illumination for Skype, Content Interviews and Webinars.  I turn them on and often look 10 pounds lighter and 10 years younger :)  Here are Studio Lights offered:

- Microphones Matter: Your webcam microphone is often a small mic, buried in the computer or laptop case, with low agility for capturing the richness of your voice.  So, I found a cute looking and very effective microphone for less than $100 called the Widget C.  Again, less than $100 and posted here:

- Cameras Are Critical: Don’t go cheap on the camera.  We have spent as much as $950 for a very high quality, zoomable, responsive USB enabled camera with remotes.  The camera must have the ability to be white balanced and capture content for high and low definition qualities.  I use the AVer v520 USB Camera:

- Lights, Camera, Microphone, and Action: There are a wide range of lights, microphones, and cameras that can be leveraged for higher quality video from your desktop or office.  Try It —- It Makes a Difference for Your Learners!

1. Learning TRENDS - New Server 19 Years Later! Yes, Learning TRENDS is almost 20 years old.  I started it in 1997 as a small email to some colleagues and it has grown into an occasional newsletter that I send out to almost 60,000 learning colleagues around the world.

I have used the same server for these past two decades, but it is time for me to add some small amount of HTML and graphical elements and move towards a more personalized Learning TRENDS in the coming months.  So, here it is.

If you have colleagues that would like to receive this free and vendor-neutral Elliott Masie occasional rant, rave and perspective on learning, send them to http://trends.masie.com

2. Curiosity - We Need a Metric Measure…  As the author of Big Learning Data, I receive many emails from colleagues with thoughts and ideas about the expanding world of learning data and analytics.

One colleague asked a question about the Measures of Learning Curiosity.  She wanted to know if there were any ways to indicate (from the learner themselves or other measures) how curious a person was about a topic they were about to learn.  If we had that measure, it might shape the design, format and activities that would be optimal.  If the measure were low, it might show a need for some pre-learning intervention.

Does anyone have ideas or research on this? Send me a note to emasie@masie.com

3. Learning Innovations LAB Added in February.  Our most popular LAB for Learning Professionals has almost filled up for January 2017.  So, we have opened up an additional section:

942 - Presidential Transition Process Plans: HR, Learning and Talent

Special: Presidential Transition Talent and Learning Process.

Two days after the Election, it is timely for Learning, Training and Human Resource colleagues to turn our attention to the intriguing process of the Presidential Transition.  In the next few months, thousands of new hires for Presidential Appointments will be made and much more with the orderly leadership transition process that is unique and impressive about the United States.

I have had exposure and some experience with the Presidential Transition Process in previous administrations and it is supported by a true non-partisan organization, Partnership for Public Service. For the past few months, teams from both major candidates have been working in the same building in DC, along with staff from the Partnership, planning every element of the Transition.  This includes:

- Details of Thousands of Jobs to be Filled in Federal Agencies and Embassies Globally.
- Background and Security Checking Processes Established.
- HR Talent and Recruitment System Set Up for Deployment Day After Election.
- Defining Key Candidates for Senior Positions (Cabinet and Sub-Cabinet).
- Building the Day by Day Schedule for the incoming new Administration.  Including, co-location of several key hires to help with transition.
- Detailed Elements for Planning, Inauguration and More.
- Out-Going Transition for President Obama’s Team.
- Learning, Training and Orientation Processes for New Team Members.

I would suggest that you go to this website and look at the eBook or PDF of the Presidential Transition Team.  It will intrigue you as a colleague in our field: http://presidentialtransition.org/

From an organizational and culture perspective, it is fascinating to explore how a Campaign Team, which has been in a political battle mode, shifts into a Transition Team with a very different mode of operation.

Hope you enjoy these Talent, Learning and HR Perspectives.

1. Five Learning Conversations about Learning! There were five intriguing conversations at Learning 2016, which just ended last week in Orlando, with 1,625 global colleagues.  Here are the five conversations that were core for me and will continue in our work going into 2017:

- The Learning Panorama Expands: We are moving from mandating a single learning activity (class or eLearning) for a worker to a more engaged learner, who has a literal Learning Panorama of choices.  These include L&D content, structured programs, open content (e.g. TED), peer connections, user offered content and shoulder to shoulder coaching from fellow workers.  The Learning Panorama is growing and is being driven by workers more than the L&D department.

- Learning Recommendations Desired: The learner would love to get a set of personalized Learning Recommendations to help them sort through the choices in the Learning Panorama. They want recommendations based on trusted ratings from peers, subject matter expert guidance and, soon, input from Machine Learning systems that will match activities to their needs, histories and styles.  The Learning Recommendation functionality may be part of or added to an LMS or LCMS.

- Video Stretches to Shorter, AR, Searchable and More: The role of video in learning content keeps growing radically.  In many organizations, video content exceeds the consumption to text or graphical content. And, the video formats are evolving to be more compressed, including Virtual Reality, 360 Views, Searchable Elements and more. Yet, many organizations’ Learning Systems are inadequate to handle increased video usage and personalization.

- Experiences Are Learning, Too: Let’s move from creating classes and courses to more Experiences.  Imagine experiences as varied as a Structured 1 Day Stretch Assignment, A Learning Escape Room, A Deconstruction of a Business Process or even an Audio Facilitated Guided Tour of a Business Area - with content supplied through earphones to augment the visual.  Learners are thirsty for Experiences!

- Brain/Learning World Explored: We dove into the world of Brain Science and Bio Data to explore how the world of learning might be shaped by breakthroughs in the study of cognitive processes.  Imagine wearing a FitBit for Learning or getting a Brain Scan that illustrates how you, as a learner, respond to content.

Each of these conversations rattled around our 3 1/2 days at Learning 2016 and will be expanded and explored in the work of The MASIE Center and in future Learning TRENDS notes.  Stay tuned!

2. E is for Everywhere Learning - Beyond Devices: We have been exploring how we move learning from classrooms and desktops/laptops/phones to more of an “Everywhere” element.  At our recent event we experimented with two versions:

- Learning Digital Signage: We leveraged 12 large screens throughout the conference area, each connected to an Android Device, which could be easily programmed with a Digital Sign rotation that was appropriate for the time. It was very powerful to be able to have content on screens as people left a keynote like Anderson Cooper - that would suggest additional conversations.  The cost and complexity of Digital Signage has gone done dramatically in recent months.

- LearningTV to Hotel Rooms: Each morning, our participants could wake up to a LearningTV show, hosted by Allison Anderson and myself, providing learning appetizers for the coming day.  The shows were about 12 minutes long and produced in a simple LearningTV studio right in the learning space.

The E in eLearning can also be about Everywhere!  More details to follow on these techniques in weeks to come.

3. Curation is Essential for Events - Video Example: After a major class, program or conference, the learning professional has a massive opportunity to also create and facilitate Curation of content.  Here is a short video that we just released that is an example:

I am evolving my design thinking to allocate about 20% of design time AFTER the program to Curation Facilitation.

4. Allegiance Video in Movie Theaters in December: TRENDS readers followed our role as producers of Allegiance, a Broadway show starring Lea Selonga, George Takei and Telly Leung.  Now, we can announce that Allegiance will be shown in over 400 movie theaters across the U.S. on December 13th.  We captured an amazing movie of the show and you can see and feel the excitement of this story. Here is an announcement and video clip:

It is an amazing story and we hope that many of you can see it at your local theaters.

2. Digital Signage for Everywhere Learning.
3. Darn, the Apple Earphone Switch is Frustrating.
4. Last Minute Registration is Open - Hotel Rooms Added!

1. Taking the TRAIN to LEARNING!  I am continuing a 20 year tradition of taking the TRAIN to Florida to host the Learning 2016 Event.  Today at 3 pm, I will board the Amtrak Silver Star in Washington, DC and for the next 18 hours zoom down to Orlando, Florida.  It is a time of reflection, final planning and relaxing before hosting an event with over 1,600 global learning colleagues.  I would love to chat with some TRENDS readers who live along the way. Here is a map and invite to chat: http://www.learning2016.com/item/i-m-training-to-learning

2. Digital Signage for Everywhere Learning: The “e” in eLearning is all about EVERYWHERE!  So, I have always wanted to stretch our own use of digital signage as a learning component for our event. This year, we are experimenting with very large screens, Android media players and dynamic signage for adding engagement, updates, personalization and more. Details at: http://www.learning2016.com/item/digital-signage-learning

3. Darn, the Apple Earphone Switch is Frustrating. I really enjoy Apple products and use their phones, tablets and desktops. But, when they change an interface and make millions of devices stranded, it is annoying.  My new iPhone 7+ is great, but last night, I could not listen through my earphones and also be charging the phone.  Apple’s ending of the earphone plug is annoying and not focused on good user experience. Darn!

4. Last Minute Registration is Open - Hotel Rooms Added!  If you and your colleagues are able to add Learning 2016 as a last minute event choice, we have extended our discount program and added more Disney hotel rooms.  Go to http://www.learning2016.com and access the Last Minute Registration Fees.
