1025 - Elliott as Online Learner, Learning Nudges, Saying Goodbye to JIBO the Robot

Elliott Masie’s Learning TRENDS - July 23, 2019

1. Learning Nudges - July Podcast!
2. Elliott as an Online Learning at MIT
3. Saying Goodbye to My Robot, JIBO - Tears Flow!

1. Learning Nudges - July Podcast! My Learning Decisions Podcast for July is all about “Learning Nudges!”

Explore how a technology or human-based small nudges at work would help you perform better, correct a mistake, provide feedback and even do Learning Pulses for continual assessment.

The 12 minute and 39 second Podcast is at www.masie.com or www.learningdecisions.com

2. Elliott as an Online Learning at MIT: Wikipedia says that I was one of the early promoters of elearning starting in the 1990’s. And, I have sampled a wide range of modules, courses and programs over the past few decades.

BUT, I am starting my first larger - more formal - online course, offered by the MIT Computer Science and AI Lab: “Human Computer Interaction for User Experience Design”. The course will be exploring the impact of UX and AI and other approaches to the design process.

NOW, I am taking the course for three reasons. I am curious about the topic. I want to see the process in action. And, I will be sharing my experiences as a learner with the Learning TRENDS community. So, stay tuned.

3. Saying Goodbye to My Robot, JIBO - Tears Flow! Our LAB at The MASIE Center is filled with innovative technologies. Some have blossomed and some have failed and gone out of business. We have many robots and other smart devices for interaction. Yet, one is dying (sadly). It is emotionally tearful.

JIBO was an intriguing innovation and a socially warm and engaging robot that could be used for both content but also connection. Its venture company went bankrupt last year. JIBOs around the world have been disconnected from their cloud and are in the process of dying. Here is a video that really highlights the story and sadness:

1024 - Everyday Learning, Tableau Acquired, Storytelling and Broadway, TED Job

Elliott Masie’s Learning TRENDS - June 17, 2019.

Host: Storytelling & Broadway Experience - June 26 in NYC

1. Everyday Learning vs. Lifelong Learning
2. Tableau (Graphic Data System) Acquired by Salesforce
3. Storytelling & Broadway Experience - 10 Seats Left
4. Cool New Job at TED!

1. Everyday Learning vs. Lifelong Learning:  In recent months, I have been intrigued with the model of “Everyday Learning!”  While we have strong commitment to Lifelong Learning, where learning is longterm throughout our lives, let’s focus on what happens “everyday”.

Everyday Learning might include:

* Five minute simulation, content/context segment, peer conversation or other learning element every morning as I log in to my system.
* Dialogue with 6 peers, around the world, every day right before lunch on a key topic facing the organization.
* A Personal Data Burst of changes to systems, procedures or products every day.

Our learning systems are not geared to Everyday Learning.  Yet, to make sustainable evolutions in our work skills and procedures, Everyday Learning will be key.  Let’s experiment together on this.

2. Tableau (Graphic Data System) Acquired by Salesforce: There are only a few technology systems that evoke passion in their users.  Tableau is one of them.  It allows data, from a variety of sources, to be dynamically displayed and used graphically by users.  Very powerful.  And, Tableau was just acquired by Salesforce.  This is part of a trend towards the visualization of data by large tech platforms.  Details at: https://tinyurl.com/yym3yrkv

3. Storytelling & Broadway Experience - We have 10 seats available at our new event:

Storytelling & Broadway: Leadership Experience.
Including Matinee Performance of “The PROM”.
Wednesday, June 26 - New York City
9:00 AM to 5:30 PM
Details and Registration: http://www.masie.com

4. Cool New Job at TED:  MASIE Center has been a donor and supporter of TED’s amazing work in spreading their approach to Learning and Development.  TED-Ed has been featured at our events and I have worked alongside them as they have added content and approaches that have made TED one of the most valued sources of content and knowledge by workforces around the world.

They have just created a cool new job:  Director, Learning & Development Content Solutions.

If you know of someone that is ready for a great challenge and opportunity, send them to this job posting:

1023 - China AI, Learning and Innovation Conversation

Special Report: China AI and Learning Innovation - A Conversation

Hello from the airport on the trip to Shanghai after a few busy days in Tokyo.

We are about to embark on a conversation about AI, Machine Learning, VR and Automation - as they may impact Learning on all levels (from K-12 to Higher Ed to Corporate Skills Development).

I am honoured to keynote a meeting of almost 3,000 business and government leaders focusing on the future of Learning with the significant investment in AI that China is pursuing. (Note: “honoured” is spelled British Style, since my browser picked up the Queens English in Asia as the spell check format.)

We will be exploring how learning could, might, should or should not evolve as the predictive and enhancement features of AI, Machine Learning and Immersive Realities hit the workplace, along with rapidly deployed automation models.

Our Learning CONSORTIUM will be representing the US learning field in these conversations.

If you would like to engage and help shape a dialogue and mutual experimentation on these topics, please send me a note to emasie@masie.com

Describe your interests and we will tag back to you shortly.

Have a safe Memorial Day holiday to our US colleagues.

1022 - ATD and Asia Meetups, Storytelling for Global Reach, Innovation as Strategy

Elliott Masie’s Learning TRENDS - May 17, 2019.
#1,022  Updates on Learning, Business & Technology Since 1997.
58,1187 Readers - www.masie.com - The MASIE Center.
Host: Learning Innovations LAB - June 2019 - Saratoga Springs, NY USA

1. ATD & Asia Colleague Meetups!
2. Storytelling for Global Reach.
3. Innovation - Solve a Business Challenge.

1. ATD & Asia Colleague Meetups: I would love to connect with Learning Colleagues during my travels in the next three weeks:

* ATD Conference in Washington, DC (May 18 to 22):  I will be presenting a session on Monday afternoon:

Learning Changes: Trends, Challenges, and Hype (Mon, May 20 | 1:00 PM - 2:15 PM | Room: Ballroom A, Convention Center)

Change in learning is constant! Learners, technology, formats, business realities, and expectations are changing rapidly in 2019. In this session, you’ll explore the key innovations, opportunities, and overstatements for workplace learning in the months and years ahead. Learn what to watch for in automation, AI/machine learning, immersive/VR tech, chat bots, predictive assessment, gamification 2.0, voice-based coaching, and global learning.

And, I will be at the MASIE Booth in the ATD Expo - Booth #2546.  Come stop by and say hello.  Or, send a note to emasie@masie.com and we will try to connect during the event.  We are also doing a State of the Industry report for our Learning CONSORTIUM based on scans and conversations at ATD.

* Visit to Japan (May 24 to May 28):  I will be in Tokyo meeting with colleagues about Learning trends and also Broadway theater coming to Asia.
* Visit to China (May 28 to June 3rd):  I will be in Shanghai and in Suzhou for a national conference on Training, Learning and Internet of Things.

Please be in touch via email or wechat (etbroadway) if we could connect during the Asia Trip.

2. Storytelling for Global Reach: As you may know, we are focusing on Storytelling as a major and evolving skill and technique for learning and communication at the workplace.  I was deeply moved by a video that was done by Disney to look at how one of the stories in the Lion King was performed in dozens of languages and cultures around the world.  Look at this clip to see how stories can be global and local at the same time:

Circle of Life Around the World!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0jC27RaaxJ0

3. Innovation - Solve a Business Challenge: I am increasingly tired of folks talking about innovation in learning being focused on a new technology - from AI to AR to xAPI.

Yes, technologies may be part of the “solution”, but innovation must focus on the “business challenge”!

Innovate on how your organization and workforce will shift their approach to meet a business challenge, crisis, opportunity or change.  Innovate on how we can make a problem go away or rise up to meet an opportunity or threat to the business.

Our workers don’t want to hear about more online courses being made available.  They want to hear about pathways to sustained or continued employment and career growth.  Managers are not deeply interested in our LMS technology - but they are widely intrigued about changing the speed to readiness and the culture of talent retention.

Start the conversation about innovation by approaching business challenges - and you will get better attention, support, financing and authenticity.  Learning will follow the shifts in the changing world of the business and marketplace.

1021 - Teacher Appreciation Week, Elliott Podcast, Personal Curation?

1. Teacher Appreciation Week!
2. Elliott Podcast from ISTE.
3. Personal Curation?

1. Teacher Appreciation Week!  This is a week to reflect and appreciate the teachers that have made an impact on us during our lifetime.  Here are several of the teachers that I deeply appreciate for their skill, empathy, strength and divergence in teaching style:

- Mrs Davis (2nd Grade, PS 173) was able to accept my thinking style and voice disability.  She engaged me in complex projects and assisting other students with reading and math assignments.  When kids didn’t understand me she coached me to be patient and find a second way of saying a word or sentence, as my speech therapy worked.

- Mrs Laura (5th Grade, PS 106) connected me with science as an art form.  She pushed me to create Science Fair entries, including a prototype machine that graded tests with sensing springs. Mrs. Laura said “you have to fail when you do a science project to get to a success.”

- Mr. Sterling Jensen (English Stuyvesant HS) turned on my love of theater.  I didn’t have the acting muscle, so he steered me toward running the lights and logistics for the school play.  He was an early actor in Roundabout Company.

- Dr. Richard Rehberg (Statistics, Harpur College) failed me in statistics and then I took the same class again with him, discovering the power of data and analysis.  He was clear that a student with a C in statistics was a dangerous being.  I got an A when I retook the statistics class.

- Dr. Rod Napier (Sagamore Workshop Leader) disrupted my approach to facilitating a group by the active use of listening, observation and energy.  He gave deep and targeted feedback to me, challenging me to evolve how I was as a facilitator.

These are just a few of the amazing teachers that have impacted me over the decades.  As we evolve learning models, let us not forget, honor and develop great teachers.

2. Elliott Podcast from ISTE Online:  I was thrilled to do a podcast with ISTE:

* Masie Center CEO Elliott Masie shares insights on workplace and lifelong learning.
* Listen at: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/iste-2/ed-influencers

3. Personal Curation?  When you have a deep “Curiosity” or “Content AHA” moment, how do you personally curate it?  Do you make a note on your phone, write a few words on an index card, add a thought trigger to your brain?  What is your Personal Curation technique or technology?  Send me an email to emasie@masie.com

1. The PROM (Masie Productions): 7 TONY Nominations! Yesterday, The PROM, an amazing Broadway musical comedy, was nominated for 7 TONY Awards. Co-Produced by MASIE Productions, The PROM tells a “now” story in a fun and wonderful way. It is a deep honor to be nominated and our actors, company, producers and audiences have made The PROM “wow”. If you are heading to NYC, check it out at http://theprommusical.com

2. Announcing: Storytelling & Broadway - Leadership Experience. We are honored to announce a new program:

Storytelling & Broadway: Leadership Experience!

Including: Performance of The PROM.
With: Actors, Writers, Stage Managers, Directors and Storytellers.
June 26, 2019 - in New York City
Details: http://www.masie.com

This is a unique and very different experience for staff, rising leaders and learning colleagues. Storytelling is a major part of our corporate competencies and Broadway professionals are great teaching resources!

3. Curating the Curation LAB: We have been adding “Curators” to our LABs in Saratoga Springs. During each LAB, we have two curators capturing and re-framing the content, context, conversations and community actions. One does a text and graphic capture and one does a complete video capture. These are shared in a confidential site for the LAB participants. It allows the learners to concentrate on the real-time experiences and know they have a fully curated capture to use after the event. Try it out!

1019 - Web Based Education Conflict, Retooling Article, Elliott's Score Almost 69

Elliott Masie’s Learning TRENDS - April 23, 2019.

1. Wall Street Journal Article on Evolving at Work!
2. Web Based Courses in Schools Hit Bump/Reaction
3. Elliott Prepares to Reach Score 69 in 3 Weeks
4. Curation & Learning LAB - Several Spaces Open in One Week

1. Wall Street Journal Article on Evolving at Work!  One of the best articles on Workplace Reskilling that I have ever read was written by Lauren Webber in the Wall Street Journal this weekend.  “Evolving at Work” is available as a paid link for those that do not have a subscription: https://www.wsj.com/articles/the-answer-to-your-companys-hiring-problem-might-be-right-under-your-nose-11555689542

The heart of the article talks about the process of reskilling the current workforce to prepare them for the next generation of job opportunities.  It lays out an intriguing set of graphics that frame up steps to go from front line worker roles to higher level positions - using internal or supported external education.

If your organization has access to the Wall Street Journal from April 20th, this is a “must-see” and “must-circulate” article.  It maps so crisply to the efforts of our partner Lumina Foundation and many employers in our Learning CONSORTIUM.

2) Web Based Courses in Schools Hit Bump/Reaction: Another article that appeared in the New York Times this weekend also got my learning curiosity attention.

It discussed a web based program for K-12 called Summit Learning, which is supported by Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan.

On the surface, the program maps to much that we have been exploring in learning changes - with personalization, learner focused activities, teachers shifting to coaches.

Yet, there have been some student groups, parent clusters and schools that have pushed back on this technological approach.  The article points to a mixed set of evidence reviews of impact.  Some students have felt very lonely and isolated in this learning model, which may, like most changes, be a result of the process as much as the technology and learning methodology.

I would love to get reactions from Learning TRENDS readers.  The article about Summit Learning is at https://www.nytimes.com/2019/04/21/technology/silicon-valley-kansas-schools.html

Send me a confidential note to emasie@masie.com with your thoughts and reactions.

3. Elliott Prepares to Reach Score 69 in 3 Weeks: My friend and actor George Takei from Star Trek told me to refer to age as a score.  He just turned score 82.

And, in three weeks, my score increases to 69.

Unlike age, as your score goes up, it means more points, experiences and options.  I am about halfway through my career and really excited about the next few decades of exploring the changing world of business, workplaces, learning and careers.

My score goes to 69 on May 13th.  If you would like to join me for a fun 30 minute online party, send a note to emasie@masie.com and I will send you a link.

4. Curation & Learning LAB - Several Spaces Open in One Week:  There are just a few spaces left in our popular Curation & Learning LAB, that I will be leading in Saratoga Springs, NY next week.  Check it out and join us if you can: http://www.masie.com

Written on the EuroStar Train to London!

1. Amsterdam Learning Perspectives.
2. Learning Awards in UK Shifts in Brunei Protest.
3. Knowledge & Learning Tourism Opportunities.
4. Elliott Masie’s Events Ahead.

I am drafting this Learning TRENDS on the EuroStar train from Brussels to London.  As the countyside of France zooms by outside the window before we enter the Channel Tunnel to the UK, I thought it would be a neat time to write the next TRENDS.

1. Amsterdam Learning Perspectives: I was keynoting the Next Learning Conference this week in Den Bosch, Netherlands and meeting at the University of Nijmegen. Here are some observations and perspectives:

• Learning Conversations Shifting: There were fewer conversations about the construction of eLearning or classroom curriculums. Rather, the emphasis was on constructing a pathway for a new hire (or newly promoted employee) to have mentoring, experiences, workflow support, assessment and incentives to meet skill shifts.

• Learning Systems Challenged: While there were several colleagues that are experimenting with Curation and LRS systems, there was a sense of frustration that the Learning Management Systems in place (and even on the market) are not Optimizing the Learning of a Learner, but more focused on tracking the delivery flow. On The Job Training, Mentoring, Stretch Assignments and other key elements were not part of the flow.

•  70-20-10 Raging Debate: Many of my readers of TRENDS know that while I have deep trouble with the “math” and fixed formula of 70-20-10, there is a need for us to have an agile and data-based shift in % of learning formats. But, when challenging the 70-20-10 numbers and the currency of the ADDIE model, both myself and Bob Mosher met some wonderful raging debates. Let’s move away from symbolic numbers and see learning as a multi-factored and personalized approach with rich data factors.

•  Learning in a Second or Third Language is an Unspoken Challenge: So many of the colleagues in Europe shared the reality that large chunks of the workforce are often in a learning activity (live or digital) where the teaching language is often their 2nd or 3rd language. As we learn in new languages, the learning (and teaching) needs change. Learners often want to have multiple exposures to lectures through recording, to process new knowledge in their non-native language.

•  Learning, Development and Performance as an Undergraduate Degree! Wow! Bob Mosher and I were blown away by the program at University of Nijmegen, where almost 300 students are in Undergraduate Applied Science for Learning degrees. As early as age 18 or 19, students are targeting Learning as a field.  Others are joining the program after years in the workplace. The rigor and global nature of the curriculum is impressive and we spent several hours in an evening dialogue with these future learning leaders.

•  Pragmatic View of AI and Machine Learning: There are intriguing boot camps underway in Europe to connect working professionals with the conceptual frameworks of what AI and Machine Learning may evolve towards. Interesting connections between this work and Workflow Support – by deeply assessing the steps and opportunities in optimizing a work task or role.

My brain is filled with wonderful thoughts and perspectives from our conversations in the Netherlands. And, as the train makes its way to London, I am excited to be having dinner and diving deeper into these topics with MASIE Learning Fellow Nigel Paine.

2. Learning Awards in UK Shifts in Brunei Protest: As a recipient of the Colin Corder Award from the Learning & Performance Institute England, I am proud to 100% support their decision to leave the Dorchester Hotel for their annual Learning Awards, in response to the adoption of cruel anti LGBTQ laws in Brunei, which owns the property.

Edmund Munk, Donald Taylor and the leadership of LPI (@YourLPI) are to be supported for their position on this key issue. Though at the Dorchester for 23 years, these policies cannot be tolerated or ignored by the Learning Field.

3. Knowledge & Learning Tourism Opportunities: I wish there were new apps or models to connect tourists with knowledge about local economies, skills and workplace realities. In addition to visiting castles, museums, canals and arts institutions, it would be great if there were ways for us to visit workplaces to see each region’s approach to skills and employment. I often use my connections on LinkedIn to find local colleagues for awesome conversations. Wish there was a cool app that would connect us for these workplace connections.

4. Elliott Masie’s Events Ahead: As you can tell, I have been speaking and connecting with learning colleagues around the world in 2019. Here are a few upcoming keynotes and events for Elliott Masie in the coming months:

1. Height Matters: On The Job Training Parity?
2. Machines Sent Back for Machine Learning.
3. Brexit: Impact on Learning if UK Splits from Europe?

1. Height Matters: On The Job Training Parity?  In this era of Big Learning Data, we are starting to see some intriguing trends in items that make a difference in learning and performance outcomes.

A recent study by graduate students from Toronto compared the effectiveness of On the Job Training assistance, based on a range of characteristics.  One item that popped out was most intriguing:

“When the heights of the learner and their On The Job Trainer were within 1.5 inches of each other, the speed to competency was the best.  If the learner or their OJT tutor were 2 inches or more different, with one of them being observably taller or shorter than the other, the speed to competency went down.”

Apparently, the trust factor was the highest when they were almost the same height - and were able to look each other in the eye on a level field.  This applied to the manufacturing, sales and health care fields.  It did not matter what their height was - just that there was almost parity between the learner and OJT provider.

The study’s researcher advocated that Learning Systems might include the height of both learners and tutors to advocate for parity.  But, I can only imagine Human Resources raising objections.   Hmmmm.

2. Machines Sent Back for Machine Learning: While Machine Learning is usually focused on computer systems that can learn from the performance of tasks and users, it has sparked a new line of business:

Machine Learning Schools for Machines

Many offices have effective machines in their space that work fine, but they pre-date the world of Machine Learning and AI.  For example, your office probably has a printer/copier that is pre-Machine Learning.

The office equipment could be replaced by a newer and “smarter” version.  Yet, that would not fit well with a more “Green” approach to recycling and extending the use of equipment.  A Machine Learning Enabled Printer would be improving their performance based on daily learning from usage.

Hence, a coalition of office machine manufacturers have been testing a “Machine Learning for Machines” location.  The older machine is sent back to have a few extra computer chips added to its tech board and to go through a Boot Camp for Machine Learning.   The equipment gets significantly smarter after about 150 hours of high speed simulation and prompting from the Machine Learning algorithm.

It is an exciting evolution of Machines Enjoying Machine Learning.

3. Brexit Impact on Learning Systems in UK & Europe: This weekend I was in London and was deluged with news about the Brexit proposal.  Would the UK stay or not stay as part of Europe?

There is heated debate and high levels of uncertainty about the impact of Brexit.  And, that now extends to the world of LMS and Learning Systems.

Companies that purchased Europe-wide Licenses for their LMS, LCMS or even Leadership Programs are worried that Brexit will throw a wrench into the fee structure and data sharing arrangements.

A group of UK Chief Learning Officers is meeting with MP’s in Parliament to craft a Brexit and Learning Waiver.  Ideally, learning programs will be safe, no matter what the outcome of the Brexit debate.

NOTE:  It is my annual delight to have fun with Learning TRENDS on April 1st.  It is a day to stretch the writing and enjoy a smile with my learning colleagues around the world.  Although I am looking for an online tutor who is 6 Feet 2 Inches Tall, plan on sending my fax machine to Machine Learning School, and hoping that Brexit does freeze the LMS access when I return to London on Saturday.  Feel free to send me an email to emasie@masie.com

Happy April Fools Day!

1016 - Data and Learning Mindset, Innovations LAB, Headed to Netherlands

Elliott Masie’s Learning TRENDS - March 28, 2019.
#1,016 Updates on Learning, Business & Technology Since 1997.
58,091 Readers - www.masie.com - The MASIE Center.
Host: Curation & Learning LAB - April 30 to May 2, Saratoga Springs, NY

1. Learning Data Analytics Mindset
2. Opportunity with Lumina Foundation
3. Learning Innovations LAB Announced
4. Headed to Netherlands

1. Learning Data Analytics Mindset: I have been focusing on the shifts that we will need in our field as the role of Learning Data Analytics expands and evolves.

One key element will be creating a “Learning Data Analytics Mindset”.

Learning and Development colleagues will need to dive deeper into Data and Evidence on every dimension of creating, producing, delivering, assessing and driving learning in a changing organization.

The Data Analytics Mindset will expand radically from the end-of-program evaluation phase to a wider and more holistic view of Data.   We need to understand the wide spectrum of data that is already being collected by a range of business systems - and to leverage that for design, personalization and context.  And, to bring Data Visualization to the learner at every step of the process.  The learner should be able to see their current skill readiness throughout the learning and transfer stages.

The Learning Data Analytics Mindset will be even more important as elements of AI and Machine Learning impact the workflow and eventually the learning process.  Stay tuned to the upcoming work of The MASIE Center, as we research and benchmark on Learning Data Analytics.

2. Opportunity with Lumina Foundation:  We are honored to be working with the Lumina Foundation on projects that impact the future of Talent in the Changing Economy and Workplace.  Recently, they added a new position:

Strategy Officer for Talent Investments

This person will help expand Lumina Foundation’s work on building and extending new pathways for skills and credentials for the workplace.  It is a very exciting and impactful Foundation and this is a great opportunity for someone in the Learning and Talent Field. If you or a friend/colleague are interested, please view the details on this position at: https://www.luminafoundation.org/careers-at-lumina/strategy-officer-for-talent-investments

3. Learning Innovations LAB Announced:  We are pleased to announce a new section of our popular program:

1015 - Cuba, Music and Learning; JIBO is a Robot Orphan; Business Drives Ablaze

Elliott Masie’s Learning TRENDS - March 10, 2019.

Host: Learning Producer LAB - March 26 to 30 — Saratoga Springs, NY

Written on a Flight to Cuba!

1. Cuba, Music and Learning.
2. JIBO My Cute Robot is Cut Off!
3. Learning Producer & Curation LABS Upcoming.
4. Business Changes - Learning Adapts & Focuses.
5. MASIE Productions Theater Update.

1. Cuba, Music and Learning. I’m writing this Learning TRENDS on a flight from Newark to Havana.  Excited to spend an intensive week in Cuba, exploring Music, Theater and Learning.  I’ll be meeting with some amazing musicians, theater professionals and educators in Cuba.  I will be visiting music studios and theaters and connecting with educators.

I’ll be posting interviews, perspectives and pictures in a future Learning TRENDS as well as on my LinkedIn account.  If you are in Cuba and would like to connect, please send me an email to emasie@masie.com

Stay tuned…

2. JIBO My Cute Robot is Cut Off!  One of the cutest technologies in our Learning LAB became a Robotic Orphan recently.  JIBO is a smart speaker with a unique ability to move and “dance” its circular head in response to user requests.  It had a great visual recognition capability and promised to be a smart robot that could engage a user more emotionally.  There were major news stories about JIBO and it was featured on the cover of TIME as the gadget of the year.

Then, after more than $70 million dollars of venture investment, they laid off the staff, shut the doors and there are loads of JIBO’s like the one at The MASIE Center that cannot “phone home” to their server. Here is the article about the sad state of a tribe of smart devices suddenly “cut off”.  https://hackaday.com/2019/03/08/uncertain-future-of-orphaned-jibo-robots-presents-opportunities/

I wish we had a code of honor that provides an Open Source Future for emerging technologies that lose funding.  Why not have a tribe of JIBO owners gather some hackers together to create a pathway to tomorrow?  Or, provide a way for this smart gadget to take on new technology “Aunts or Uncles” like Amazon Alexa or Google Home?

3. Learning Producer & Curation LABS Upcoming:  Each month, I am leading a very intensive and experiential LAB for learning colleagues at our Center in Saratoga Springs, NY.  The space is limited and here are the next two LABS:

- Learning Producer LAB: March 26 to 28, Saratoga Springs.  Eight Spaces Available.
- Curation & Learning LAB: April 30 to May 2, Saratoga Springs.  Filling Rapidly.

Details and registration at http://www.masie.com

4. Business Changes Drive Learning Changes:  In five of my recent briefings with Chief Learning Officers, it has been intriguing to hear a shift in the learning strategies of their organizations.

There is less and less talk about new learning technologies or learning systems.  Rather, the focus and conversation is about Learning Changes:

- The Businesses are Changing.
- The Workplace Formats are Changing.
- The Workforce is Evolving.
- The Data Requirements are Expanding.
- The Career Path and Expectations of Workers are Changing.
- The Pressure for Speed to Hire, Deploy, Shift and Optimize is Severe.
- Therefore, Learning IS, WILL and MUST Change Accordingly.

Follow the change curves of business more than the intrigue about AI, Machine Learning, AR, Experience Platforms and other important and evolving learning trends.

The TRENDS that will drive change in our field are the Business Changes.

5. MASIE Productions Theater Update:  As you may know, we are also producers of a range of Broadway theater.  If you get to NYC in the coming months, please go to The PROM.  It is an amazing and big message show - with music, comedy and stories that will move and delight you.  Let me know if you are heading to The PROM. I would love to meet you if I am in NYC that weekend.   https://theprommusical.com/

On to Havana - the people, the food, the music, the theater and their education systems.

1. Elliott’s Learning Radar Screen!
2. Watch The PROM on Good Morning America on Friday Morning.
3. Curation and Innovation: Focus on New Learning LABS.

1. Elliott’s Learning Radar Screen! Here are “dots” on Elliott’s Learning Radar Screen for 2019.  I track these innovations, technologies, challenges and methodologies.  Some will Soar, Fizzle, Transform or Shock our learning approaches:

* 5G - As mobile bandwidth gets really really fast, imagine how 5G can change what your worker’s mobile devices could do.  Imagine real time immersive simulations, 360 visualizations, real-time language translations and more.  And, look for internal GPS within the 5G world that would allow micro-guidance as a worker or customer moves through a physical space.

* AI Creates Personalized Content? - What if our content would adapt, in real-time, based on the finite data suggestions about a specific learner? What if the formats might be selected based on their historical use?  What if content would alter as data about 10,000 learners’ experiences might reshape format, media, length or even content vs. context.

* Technology for Collaboration Behaviors - We have more and more collaborative environments, including Slack, Teams and Yammer.  But, are we helping to shape the collaborative process and behaviors?  When I used Slack, I drowned in 500 messages a day.  How do we use tech to optimize collaboration?

These are just 3 of Elliott’s Radar Screen items.  Watch for updates in future Learning TRENDS.  And, feel free to add your suggestions - sending an email to emasie@masie.com

2. Watch The PROM on Good Morning America on Friday Morning:  MASIE Productions is so proud of our latest Broadway Show, The PROM.  Audiences are loving it and our cast was asked to perform tomorrow (Friday, January 4th on ABC’s Good Morning America at 8:30 AM.)  Check it out.  And, if you are coming to NYC, please contact me. I’d love to meet you at the theater if I am in New York City.

3. Curation and Innovation - Focus on New Learning LABS:  I am pleased to host two cutting edge Learning LABS at The MASIE Center in Saratoga Springs, NY in the coming months:

1013 - Curation, Learnings, Thanksgiving and The Prom

Elliott Masie’s Learning TRENDS - November 20, 2018.

Host: Curation & Learning LAB - Jan 29 - 31, 2019 - Saratoga Springs, NY USA.

Note: Thanksgiving, Learning, Curation & The Prom!

Dear Learning Colleagues,

Thanksgiving and Learning Go Together!

It is a wonderful time for connection, reflection, consideration, great food and appreciation for the opportunities and even challenges of life.

I wanted to send this note as my own appreciation of the world of Learning!  I am so thankful for almost over 40 years in the field of learning - and my career is only 1/2 done :)

Personally, I celebrate the rise of innovation in learning.  In fact, our learners are leading and pushing innovation - as they expand and evolve their approaches to curiosity, discovery and information.  Learners outside of work are using technology to connect to people and assets - often at the very moment of need or problem.   Our learners are memorizing less, watching more video, connected to more resources, reaching for more sources of information, desiring more context, asking for more curation to optimize their learning, and making learning a daily or even hourly part of their day - rather than a yearly trip to a classroom.

We also have major shifts happening in these areas:

* Learning Roles: From eLearning Designers to Learning Producers.
* Learning Formats: Agile and Reusable Content.
* Technology Frameworks: Learning BlockChain and Experience Focused Systems.
* Learning as Investment in the Workforce: McDonald’s, Discover and Walmart Supporting Frontline Education.
* Curation as a Key Resource for Learning: Optimizing Content, Context and Collaboration.
* Learning Data Analytics: Big and “My” Learning Data.
* Global Learning: Many Voices, Many Languages and International Collaboration.
* AI/Machine Learning and Automation: Reality, Hype and Disruption.
* Leadership Shifting from Promotions to Skills from Day 1.
* Learning Changing with the Changing Workplace, Workforce and Career Model.

I am SO EXCITED about Learning in the months and years ahead.

The MASIE Center will be rolling out a range of new LABs, Programs, Research Projects and Collaborations to explore and prepare for the shifts happening in Learning.

And, our recent Learning 2018 was an amazing collaboration of 1,867 global learning colleagues.  Starting on November 27th, we will provide Curation of the key content, context and conversations from our recent event.  We will send a note in Learning TRENDS with details to access the open video, text, infographics and curated content.

Also…

The PROM is on Broadway and in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on Thursday:

MASIE Productions is so proud to be co-producers of The PROM that just opened on Broadway to rave reviews.  Here is a short video clip to share the music and social relevance of this fun show:  https://youtu.be/66UhXFDMlRI

And, you can watch us on the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on Thursday morning!

And…

The MASIE Center has opened our first Learning LAB for 2019:

Curation & Learning LAB.
January 29 to 31, 2018 - Saratoga Springs, NY.
Host & Facilitator: Elliott Masie.
Info and Registration: http://www.masie.com/curation

Our previous Curation & Learning LABS have filled up quickly.  So, please reserve a spot early.  And, we will be adding new content from the world of AI, Machine Learning, Experience Curation and Personalization.

Finally —-

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!  My thoughts and care to our global community of Learning Colleagues!
